Hoyas Face No. 17/16 Creighton on Tuesday

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University men's basketball team will travel to face the No. 17/16 Creighton Bluejays in Omaha for a BIG EAST matchup on Tuesday. Tipoff at CHI Health Center Omaha is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. ET and the game will be broadcast on FS1. The Hoyas are coming into the competition following a loss at home to defending national champions No. 1 UConn on Saturday and enter Tuesday's game at 8-15 on the season with a 1-11 record in BIG EAST action. The Bluejays enter the matchup at 17-7 on the season and an 8-5 record in league play after a win at Xavier on Saturday.

ABOUT THE HOYAS
  • Georgetown is coming off an 89-64 loss to No. 1 UConn on Saturday at home. Dontrez Styles led the way for the Hoyas with 23 points in the contest. Supreme Cook also contributed 12 points and eight rebounds. Jayden Epps and Rowan Brumbaugh shared the assist duties with each dishing out four helpers apiece.
  • Epps currently sits at fourth in the league in scoring, averaging 17.6 ppg to lead a trio of Hoyas in double figures as Styles chips in 13.5 ppg and Supreme Cook adds 11.3 ppg.
  • Cook is second in the BIG EAST in offensive boards per game, pulling down 3.9 rpg on the scoring end of the floor, while his 8.0 rpg overall puts him at third in the league. Cook continues to lead the squad in efficiency on the offensive front, knocking down 62.3% (96-154) of his shots, putting him third in the conference in field goal percentage.
  • Epps dishes out 4.4 apg, ranking eighth in the BE, while his 2.3 3-pointers made per game ranks seventh in the league. 
  • The Hoyas are led by Ed Cooley who is in his 18th season as a collegiate head coach and his first season with Georgetown. In 2022, Cooley was the recipient of the Naismith Coach of the Year Award, named the Sporting News Coach of the Year, the BIG EAST Coach of the Year, the NABC District 5 Coach of the Year and the USBWA District 1 Coach of the Year.
 
ABOUT THE No. 17/16 BLUEJAYS
  • No. 17/16 Creighton is entering Tuesday's matchup with a 17-7 overall record and a 8-5 mark in BIG EAST action after defeating Xavier 78-71 on Saturday in Cincinnati. Ryan Kalkbrenner led the Bluejays with 28 points, while Baylor Scheierman (16), Steven Ashworth (12) and Trey Alexander (10) rounded out those in double figures. Scheierman turned in a double-double with a squad-best 12 rebounds while Ashworth dished out nine assists to pace the offense with Scheierman adding eight helpers of his own.
  • Scheierman leads the team in scoring averaging 18.5 ppg, ranking third-best in the BIG EAST. His scoring is closely followed by Kalkbrenner who adds 17.0 ppg (5th - BE) and Alexander who adds 16.9 ppg (6th - BE). Ashworth is the other Bluejay in double figures, tallying 10.5 ppg.
  • Scheierman leads the team with his 8.6 rpg, ranking second best in the BIG EAST. The Bluejays also have players topping the conference in field goal percentage, with Kalkbrenner leading overall making 63.8% (162-254) of his shots and Mason Miller leading the league-wide three-point category shooting 45.5% (35-77) from behind the arc.
  • Alexander, Ashworth and Scheierman all rank among the top 10 in the league in assists per game with the trio averaging 4.7 apg (7th), 4.0 apg (9th) and 3.8 apg (10th), respectively.
  • Creighton is led by Head Coach Greg McDermott who is in his 14th season with the program.
 
ABOUT THE SERIES WITH CREIGHTON
  • Tuesday's game will be the 25th all-time between the two programs, dating back to 1971. Creighton holds the 15-9 advantage over Georgetown in the series. On the road, the Hoyas are 2-8 against the Bluejays.
  • The last matchup between the two teams was on Jan. 2 at Capital One Arena, with the Bluejays emerging on top 77-60.
  • Cooley is 13-12 all-time against Creighton. He and McDermott have competed against each other 24 times in the past with Cooley holding the 13-11 advantage over McDermott.
  • Georgetown is 15-5 all-time against AP No. 17 with the last meeting against the 17th-ranked team in the country coming against the Bluejays in the finals of the 2021 BIG EAST Tournament, a 73-48 Hoya win.
