WASHINGTON – With inclement weather in the Palos Verdes area, the Georgetown University women's golf team and the entire 16-team field of the Therese Hession Regional Challenge had to pivot to a new format to get in as much golf as possible. What was supposed to be a three-round tournament turned into match play over two days at the Palos Verdes Golf Club, a par-71, 6,017-yard course.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- On Sunday, what would end up being the final round of play once Monday's play was canceled due to inclement weather, the Hoyas were able to clinch a pair of matchups while Mississippi State also tallied a pair and one matchup ended in a tie.
- Morgan Smith won her matchup against her opponent as she was up three holes with two to play, ending the match on hole 13 after starting the day on 15. Following four holes of play, Smith was down two but managed wins on holes three and five to tie up the match. The duo would be tied up again on hole eight before Smith was able to tally wins on nine, 10 and 13 to seal the victory.
- Angela Lee was the other Hoya to get the win on Sunday as she and her opponent opened play on 17 and Lee managed to go up six with four holes to play, sealing the victory on hole 12. Lee was composed through her play, but a three-win streak on holes six, seven and eight built up Lee's advantage, setting her up for the win on 12.
- Claire Chen and her Mississippi State counterpart started on hole 15 and went the distance. Chen had built up an early lead and was up three wins after hole five, but three-straight from her opponent tied the match once again. Mississippi State went up one with two to play, but Chen was able to win the final hole for a tie in a dramatic matchup.
- Megan Gormley played her opponent in the top spot very close and made up a hole as she won on hole nine after starting on 14. However, it would not be enough as she couldn't find the equalizer over the final four holes. In the second round, Gormley and her Clemson opponent opened on hole three. Despite the score being tied after five holes of play, Gormley took a lead after hole six and she would not look back. She led by as many as four down the stretch and held on for the win as she finished up three with two to play after hole 18.
- Georgia Ruffolo and her counterpart opened on hole 15 with Ruffolo falling back two early. She quickly made it back up, tying the match back up by 18. With only three lead changes over the next 10 holes, the duo were playing close but Mississippi State was able to capture three-straight holes to go up three with two to play and seal the victory.
