Hoyas Host No. 1 UConn on Saturday

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University men's basketball team will welcome the No. 1-ranked University of Connecticut to the District in a BIG EAST matchup on Saturday. Tipoff at Capital One Arena is scheduled for noon and the game will be broadcast on FS1. The Hoyas are coming into the competition following a close loss at Seton Hall on Wednesday and enter Saturday's game at 8-14 on the season with a 1-10 record in BIG EAST meetings. The Huskies enter the matchup at 21-2 on the season and a 11-1 record in league play after a win against Butler on Tuesday.

ABOUT THE HOYAS
  • Georgetown is coming off a 76-70 loss at Seton Hall on Wednesday night after a back-and-forth battle. Supreme Cook and Dontrez styles led the way for the Hoyas with 20 points each. Cook chalked up his sixth double-double of the season, going 8-for-13 from the field with a team-leading 11 rebounds and three assists. Styles recorded impressive three-point shooting, knocking down four in the first half and going 7-for-16 in overall shooting for the night while adding seven rebounds and two assists. Jayden Epps also had an all-around impact on Wednesday, contributing 15 points and leading the team with seven assists. Jay Heath rounded out the Hoyas in double-digit figures, adding 10 points and three rebounds.
  • Epps currently sits at fourth in the league in scoring, averaging 18.3 ppg to lead a trio of Hoyas in double figures as Styles chips in 13.1 ppg and Supreme Cook adds 11.3 ppg.
  • Cook is second in the BIG EAST in offensive boards per game, pulling down 3.9 rpg on the scoring end of the floor, while his 8.0 rpg overall puts him at third in the league. Cook continues to lead the squad in efficiency on the offensive front, knocking down 63.9% (92-144) of his shots, putting him second in the conference in field goal percentage.
  • Epps dishes out 4.4 apg, ranking eighth in the BE, while his 2.4 3-pointers made per game ranks sixth in the league. 
  • The Hoyas are led by Ed Cooley who is in his 18th season as a collegiate head coach and his first season with Georgetown. In 2022, Cooley was the recipient of the Naismith Coach of the Year Award, named the Sporting News Coach of the Year, the BIG EAST Coach of the Year, the NABC District 5 Coach of the Year and the USBWA District 1 Coach of the Year.
 
ABOUT THE No. 1/1 HUSKIES
  • No. 1/1 UConn is entering Saturday's matchup with a 21-2 overall record and a 11-1 mark in BIG EAST action after defeating Butler at home 71-62 on Tuesday at the XL Center for its 11th-straight win. Cam Spencer led the Husky scoring effort (20P), while Donovan Clingan recorded his first double-double of the season (18P/14R) having returned from a foot injury on Jan. 17.
  • Tristen Newton leads the team in scoring and assists averaging 15.6 ppg and 5.6 apg, with his passing ranking second best in the BIG EAST. His scoring is closely followed by Spencer who adds 15.5 ppg. Three other Huskies average double figures, with Alex Karaban scoring 14.2 ppg, Clingan contributing 12.6 ppg and Stephon Castle chipping in 10.6 ppg.
  • Newton also leads the team in rebounds with 5.4 rpg. The Huskies also have players topping the conference in field goal percentage, with Clingan leading overall making 64.4% (94-146) of his shots and Spencer leading the three-point category shooting 45.1% (64-142) from behind the arc.
  • The Huskies, who are the defending NCAA Tournament Champions, have reigned atop the AP Top 25 rankings for four weeks in a row. Their last and only conference loss was on Dec. 20 to Seton Hall.
  • UConn is led by Head Coach Dan Hurley who is in his fifth season with the program. The Huskies' winning percentage has improved in each season under Hurley, capped off by a 31-8 season last year that saw the team take the National Championship.
 
ABOUT THE SERIES WITH UCONN
  • Saturday's game will be the 74th all-time between the two programs, dating back to 1958. Georgetown barely trails UConn in the series 37-36 and the Huskies have taken the win in their last seven meetings. At home, the Hoyas are 22-12 against Connecticut.
  • The last matchup between the two teams was on Jan. 14 at the XL Center, with the Huskies emerging on top 80-67.
  • Cooley is 4-8 all-time against UConn. He and Hurley have competed against each other 13 times in the past with the first six occurring during Hurley's tenure at Rhode Island. Cooley is 8-5 against Hurley but has dropped the last three meetings.
  • The Hoyas are 3-19 all-time against AP No. 1. The last time the Hoyas faced the top-ranked team was during the 2019-20 season when they faced Duke in the 2K Empire Classic at Madison Square Garden, falling 81-73.
  • The last time the Hoyas defeated the nation's top team was on January 21, 2006 when an unranked Georgetown team outlasted the previously undefeated No. 1 Duke Blue Devils, 87-84.
