Women’s Basketball Travels to Washington for First Round of Inaugural WBIT

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University women's basketball team will face the second-seeded Washington Huskies on Thursday night in the first round of the inaugural Women's Basketball Invitational Tournament (WBIT). The matchup will take place at Alaska Airlines Arena in Seattle, Washington with tipoff scheduled for 10 p.m EDT.

About the Hoyas
  • The Hoyas had an outstanding end to the season as the squad went 6-1 in its final seven games.
  • The Blue & Gray defeated third-seeded St. John's (53-44) in the BIG EAST Tournament quarterfinals, and then downed second-seeded and then-No. 21 ranked Creighton (55-46) in the semifinals to advance to the championship game for the first time in program history.
  • Georgetown fell to top-seeded UConn in the championship by a score of 78-42.
  • Against UConn, graduate student Graceann Bennett led the Hoyas with 12 points, five rebounds and four assists. Graduate transfer Mya Bembry also had an all-around performance with 12 points of her own, along with four rebounds, one block and one steal.
  • Senior Kelsey Ransom added nine points, six rebounds, three assists and two blocks while also being named to the All-Tournament Team.
  • Following the game, it was announced at the press conference by Bennett that Darnell Haney is in discussions to become the next head coach at Georgetown University.
  • The Hoyas have posted the most wins in a season since 2010-11 with 22, as well as the best conference record at 9-9 since 2018-19.
  • The Blue & Gray is leading the league and ranked 10th in the nation in scoring defense averaging 54.5 ppg.
  • GU earned a program-record three BIG EAST Conference major awards and one all-conference honor. Senior guard Kelsey Ransom was named the BIG EAST Co-Defensive Player of the Year as well as being selected First Team All-BIG EAST.  Additionally, for the second year in a row, graduate student Graceann Bennett won the BIG EAST Sportsmanship Award. Junior forward Brianna Scott rounded out the Hoya honorees winning the BIG EAST Sixth-Woman Award.
About the Huskies
  • Washington is 16-14 on the season and went 6-12 in Pac-12 play.
  • The squad fell to Arizona in the first round of the Pac-12 Tournament by a score of 58-50.
  • Four Huskies were recognized with All-Conference honors as sunior forward Dalayah Daniels earned All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention and All-Defensive Team Honorable Mention, sophomore guard Elle Ladine was named All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention, senior forward Lauren Schwartz received All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention and freshman guard Sayvia Sellers was named to the All-Freshman Team.

About the WBIT
  • In 2023, the NCAA announced the creation of an annual 32-team postseason invitation tournament for women's basketball, which will be owned and funded by the NCAA.
  • The WBIT Committee seeded only the top half of the 32-team field. The remaining 16 teams were placed into the bracket by the WBIT Committee as close to their area of natural interest as possible.
  • The 2024 semifinals and championship will be played at historic Hinkle Fieldhouse on the campus of Butler University in Indianapolis.
  • Preliminary WBIT games are being televised on ESPN+, while the semifinals will be on ESPNU, and the finals will be on ESPN2.
  • The BIG EAST Conference boasted the most bids with four as the Hoyas are joining Seton Hall, Villanova and St. John's in the tournament.
  • This is Georgetown's first postseason berth since 2019 when the squad advanced to the WNIT quarterfinals.
