Hoyas Come From Behind to Defeat Ohio State in 10 Innings

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University baseball team came from behind to defeat the Ohio State Buckeyes capturing the Hoyas fourth sweep of the season. Behind an RBI single from Jake Hyde in the top of the ninth and an RBI double from Blake Schaaf in the top of the tenth the Hoyas captured a 4-2 victory over the Buckeyes. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 16-7 on the season while Ohio State moves to 10-11 on the year. This is the first time in the past 20 years that the Hoyas have swept four-consecutive series.

ON THE RECORD
"What a great job from our guys today, we were down to our last out and we found a way to overcome it. It was a really well pitched game, their starter was tough and we were not getting many runs but we found a way to get it done when we needed to. I thought Everett Catlett gave us a great start going six innings, Cody Jensen, Andrew Citron and Kai Leckszas were all great for us out of the bullpen. I am really proud of the offense; we had some guys come off the bench like Marco Castillo and Andrew Bergeron who had back-to-back hits. Blake Schaaf had a huge double to put us up two and Jake Hyde had a big RBI for us in the top of the ninth to tie it up. We played a lot of good baseball all weekend long and getting a sweep on the road against a power five team is really hard to do and was really special for us. We look forward to getting back home to face Maryland on Tuesday before opening conference play next weekend." -Head Coach Edwin Thompson

HOYA HIGHLIGHTS HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first frame was scoreless for both sides. Catlett came out of the gates on fire striking out the OSU side with 15 pitches. The second inning was more of the same as Catlett picked up two more strikeouts bringing his total to five through the first two frames.
  • In the bottom of the third with runners on the corners, OSU was able to tally the first run of the day on a ground out double play giving the Buckeyes an early 1-0 advantage. OSU was able to plate another run before the end of the inning on an error by the Hoyas giving the Buckeyes a 2-0 advantage heading into the fourth frame.
  • The fourth frame was scoreless for both sides as Georgetown worked out of a jam catching a runner stealing and making a phenomenal play at the plate to keep the OSU advantage at two.
  • The Hoya offense started to get things going in the top of the fifth loading the bases with two outs. A walk from Rolling plated a run for GU, cutting the deficit to one. The Hoyas were unable to bring any of the other runners home leaving the bases loaded heading into the bottom half of the inning.
  • The sixth and seventh frames were scoreless for both sides. In the eighth, the Hoyas were able to get two runners on with two outs but were unable to bring either home, keeping the score at 2-1.
  • In the top of the ninth, Eze laced a double to left center with one out. After a balk by OSU that moved Eze to third, Hyde stepped up to the plate and laced an RBI single up the middle tying the game at 2-2. GU was able to hold off OSU in the bottom of the ninth sending the game to extra innings.
  • In the top of the tenth frame, Castillo hit a two out single to left. In the ensuing at bat, Bergeron hit a double to right putting runners on second and third with two outs for GU.
