Georgetown Downs Towson in Midweek Contest

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University baseball team defeated the Towson Tigers 8-4 on Wednesday afternoon. With the win, Georgetown improves to 23-9 on the season while the Tigers slide to 8-23 on the year.

ON THE RECORD
"What a great win tonight. Towson did an amazing job keeping us off balance offensively for the majority of the game. We were unable to get much going but when we did, we were able to capitalize. Ashtin Gilio had a big bases-clearing triple for us to get us on the board in the sixth, giving our offense some life. Our pitching staff kept us in the game today, Kai Leckszas, Jordan Yoder, Cody Bowker, Jack Volo and Nick Davis were big for us. We were able to get things going in the 11th and it was almost contagious as we strung together some big hits to put this one out of reach. I am really proud of our guys and how we fought on the road today. We will regroup and get ready for our trip to Indianapolis this weekend for another tough conference series." – Head Coach Edwin Thompson

HOYA HIGHLIGHTS HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Towson was able to load the bases with one out in the bottom of the first. An RBI single from the Tigers scored the first run of the day but GU was able to turn a double play to get out of a jam keeping the score at 1-0 heading into the second.
  • The second and third frames were scoreless for both sides. The fourth and fifth were much of the same as the Hoyas were unable to record a hit through the first five frames.
  • In the top of the sixth, GU had two runners on with two outs. Gilio stepped up to the plate and hit a bases clearing triple to right center scoring two for the Hoyas. In the ensuing at bat, Stella stepped up to the plate and hit a single through the left side bringing another runner home for the Hoyas. GU took the 3-1 lead into the bottom of the sixth frame. Towson was able to plate one run on a sac fly in the bottom half of the inning, cutting the GU lead to one.
  • Towson was able to tie it up in the bottom of the seventh on a ground out double play. GU was able to fend off the Tiger offense getting out of the inning allowing only one run. The score was once again tied heading into the eighth frame at 3-3.
  • The eighth frame was scoreless for both sides as the score remained deadlocked at 3-3 heading into the final frame.
  • The ninth was scoreless for both sides as neither team was able to plate a run. After a scoreless 10th frame, GU was able to break the tie in the top of the 11th as Castillo reached on an error and Ficca came home giving the Hoyas a 4-3 lead. Gilio stepped up to the plate and hit an RBI single extending the Hoya lead to two. In the ensuing at bat, GU hit a bases clearing double, scoring two more runs. An Eze double after a Savoy walk plated another run for the Hoyas giving GU a five-run advantage heading into the bottom of the 11th.
