WASHINGTON – The Georgetown women's lacrosse team captured a 16-5 victory at home over Xavier on Wednesday afternoon. The Hoyas are now 4-9 on the season and advance to 2-1 in BIG EAST action while Xavier falls to 3-8 overall and 0-2 in conference play.
ON THE RECORD
"I was really pleased with how we showed up for this midweek game. We were able to give everyone an opportunity to compete. Now we will focus on preparing for Butler this weekend as we continue through our conference schedule," - said Head Coach
Ricky Fried on the win.
How It Happened
- Despite rainy conditions, the Hoyas started strong with junior Maley Starr converting a ground ball into a goal just 35 seconds into the game. The Hoyas continued to push offensively with three more goals from Emma Gebhardt, Starr and Tatum Geist to go up 4-0. A transition goal from Annie McGovern as well as back-to-back nets from Gracie Driggs, featuring a behind-the-back shot, helped the Hoyas finish with seven goals at the end of the first quarter. Despite Xavier scoring two goals in the last two minutes, the Hoya defense kept the Musketeers quiet for most of the quarter.
- The second quarter saw less offensive action for both teams, but a dominant performance from Georgetown as they held Xavier scoreless for the period. Geist and Driggs each added a goal, bringing the lead to seven as the half ended 9-2.
- Georgetown again came out of the gate blazing at the beginning of the third with Geist, Starr and Driggs quickly adding three more unanswered points to the scoreboard in the first five minutes of play. With a 10-goal berth, the Hoyas continued to pile on as Lauren Lisauskas and Johanna Kingsfield contributed two more goals respectively. Although Xavier dug out a goal with 2:21 left in the quarter, the Hoyas owned the period, ending it with a 14-3 lead.
- In the fourth quarter Xavier and Georgetown traded goals as Gebhardt scored again for the Hoyas off an unassisted drive. Kingsfield chalked another goal for GU from a free position with two minutes left to seal the game at 16-5.
