Women’s Lacrosse Wins Big on the Road Against Butler

Box Score WASHINGTON – The Georgetown women's lacrosse team earned an 18-10 road win over Butler on Saturday afternoon. The Hoyas are now 5-9 on the season and advance to 3-1 in BIG EAST action while Butler falls to 2-10 overall and 1-3 in conference play.

ON THE RECORD
"It is always good to come away with a conference victory on the road," - said Head Coach Ricky Fried on the win.

How It Happened
  • Georgetown's offense generated quickly in the first quarter, with Emma Gebhardt putting the Hoyas up after converting a pass from Annie McGovern. Butler had little response to the Blue & Gray's early efforts, as Georgetown continued to pile on with goals from Kylie Hazen, Gracie Driggs, and Reagan Ziegler to reach a 4-0 lead with 8:35 left in the period. Despite some pushback from Butler as they scored back-to-back goals to put themselves back into contention, Gebhardt and Driggs each added another goal to finish the period 6-2.
  • Butler attacked first in the second quarter to score a quick goal, but the Hoya offense put together another run to reassert its dominance. Gebhardt, Driggs, and McGovern all scored within a five minute span to expand the lead to 9-3. A blitz of two more goals from Tatum Geist and McGovern just thirteen seconds apart gave the Hoyas an 11-4 berth at the half.
  • Georgetown did not slow down in the third quarter. The Hoyas connected to score another two points from Tessa Brooks and Maley Starr, stretching their lead to 11. Still, Butler pushed back, responding with two goals to put the score at 13-6 halfway through the period. The Hoyas kept Butler quiet for the rest of the quarter, topping on two more unassisted goals from Hazen and Rileigh Meyer to end with a 15-6 lead.
  • The fourth quarter saw even more scoring, as Gebhardt and Geist continued to penetrate the Hoya defense while Neely Holt scored her second goal of the season off a free position. Still, Butler continued to fight back, outscoring Georgetown with four of their own goals throughout the quarter. The Hoya lead proved too large to combat as the game ended with Georgetown still handily on top, 18-10.
Of Note
  • Gebhardt led the Hoyas with four goals and one assist, followed by Driggs with three goals and five draw controls. McGovern and Hazen also had well-rounded performances, as both contributed two goals and two assists.
  • Seven Hoyas had one caused turnover, with one notable defensive stop by Geist in transition leading to her finding an open Driggs for a goal in the first quarter.
  • The Hoyas dominated the Bulldogs in shots on goal, shooting 33 to Butler's 16.
  • In net, Leah Warehime made five saves while Olivia Shinsato made one save in the fourth quarter.
Up Next
The Hoyas will continue on their road stretch when they face Marquette on Saturday, April 13 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The opening draw is scheduled for noon at Valley Fields.
