Defense Shines in 11-8 BIG EAST Victory Over Marquette

WASHINGTON – Georgetown University's men's lacrosse team won its eighth-straight game of the season with a defensive-minded 11-8 victory over visiting Marquette on Saturday afternoon. With the win the Hoyas improve to 8-2 on the year and 2-0 in BIG EAST play while the Golden Eagles fall to 4-7 overall and 0-2 in conference action.

Hoya Highlights
  • Aidan Carroll led the Hoyas with two goals and two assists while Patrick Crogan and Alexander Vardaro both scored twice as well.
  • TJ Haley and Jordan Wray both notched a goal and an assist while Graham Bundy Jr., Cade Caggiano and Chase Llewellyn each had one goal.
  • Kade Goldberg tallied a pair of assists as well.
  • Defensively, Georgetown's defense held its eighth-straight opponent to 10 goals or fewer.
  • Seamus Foley was credited with three caused turnovers for the second-straight game while Will Godine and Wallace Halpert both had a pair.
  • With the field tilted in Marquette's favor behind a 19-3 faceoff advantage, the Blue & Gray's defense was resolute and held the Golden Eagles scoreless for spans of 19:01, 17:03 and 11:26 in the game – including blanking MU in the third quarter.
  • In goal, Anderson Moore (8-2) tied his career-high with 14 saves while collecting a personal-best six ground balls.
How It Happened
  • A slow start to the game saw Georgetown get on the board first with Llewellyn's goal at the 9:15 mark. The Golden Eagles responded with three-straight goals in a 2:26 span to lead 3-1 before Crogan found the back of the net less than two minutes later to cut the MU lead to 3-2 after the opening frame.
  • Georgetown outscored its guests 4-1 in the third frame, capitalized by a Carroll goal with 11 seconds remaining in the half, to take a 6-4 lead going into the break.
  • Coming out of the locker room, scoring was scarce in the third period as Carroll scored the lone goal for either side to make it 7-4 in favor of the Hoyas with 15 minutes to play. Moore had eight of his 14 saves in the frame.
  • Not backing down, Marquette scored three goals to open the final stanza and knot things up at 7-7 with 12:50 to play. Undeterred, the Georgetown offense went to work and scored four-straight goals over the next 11 minutes to put the game out of reach.
Marquette Notes
  • Will Foster led the Golden Eagles with five goals while Jake Stegman had three assists.
  • Luke Williams took every faceoff for Marquette, winning 19-of-22 on the day including each of the first nine to go with 15 ground balls.
  • Caleb Creasor collected 10 saves between the pipes in the loss.
Hoya Notes
  • Bundy's goal ties him for fourth-place all-time on the career goals list, matching Greg McCavera ('99) with 142.
  • Halpert's two caused turnovers give him 62 for his career, tying Will Bowen ('23) for third-place all-time in program history.
  • The win is the 18th-straight BIG EAST conference win and the 24th-consecutive victory over league opponents including the BIG EAST Championships.
