Baseball Falls at St. John’s

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University baseball team fell 6-4 to the St. John's University Red Storm on Friday afternoon in Queens, New York. With the loss, the Hoyas drop to 33-19 on the season and 12-7 in BIG EAST action, while St. John's sits at 34-15-1 and 14-6 in the BIG EAST. The Hoyas have now clinched the No. 3 seed in the BIG EAST Championship which marks the highest in program history.

ON THE RECORD
"Congratulations to St. John's on beating us today. They outplayed us, we didn't defend like we needed to and we didn't get the big hit when we needed to. I was proud of Andrew Bergeron to give us the lead early with a two-run home run, and Marshall Whitmer out of the bullpen did a really good job. It just wasn't our day, but we'll come back tomorrow, be ready to play and try to win the series." - said Head Coach Edwin Thompson.

HOYA HIGHLIGHTS
  • Andrew Williams pitched 4.1 innings allowing five hits and fanning one batter.
  • Cody Jensen tossed 1.2 frames striking out one.
  • Marshall Whitmer went for the final 2.0 innings allowing no runs and tallying a trio of strikeouts.
  • Joe Hollerbach went 2-for-4 with a home run, an RBI and a walk.
  • Jake Hyde was 2-for-5 also boasting a home run and two RBIs.
  • Andrew Bergeron went 2-for-4 at the plate with another homer and an RBI.
  • Michael Eze was 2-for-4 hitting a triple, while Kavi Caster was 1-for-4 in the contest.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • It was scoreless for the first two innings, until Bergeron got things rolling with a leadoff homer to left center to make it 1-0.
  • With the bases loaded, Hyde hit a single through the left side allowing runners to advance, and Josh Rolling to cross the plate giving the Blue & Gray the 2-0 lead.
  • St. John's would then even the score in the bottom of the inning and add another in the fourth to take the lead.
  • In the top of the fifth, back-to-back home runs from Hollerbach and Hyde put GU back on top.
  • However, SJU answered in the bottom of the inning to knot it at four.
  • The Red Storm tacked on two more in the bottom of the seventh to get the 6-4 win.
OF NOTE
  • Hollerbach and Hyde's back-to-back home runs was the third time this season GU has done it. The Hoyas had shots from Hollerbach and Caster in a win over UMBC on May 7, and Christian Ficca and Rolling hit back-to-back home runs against UAlbany on March 16.
  • It was Hyde's 11th homer of the season, and Hollerbach's eighth.
  • Bergeron now has three over the fence on the year.
