Georgetown Defeats St. John’s 3-0 Securing Series Victory

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University baseball team defeated St. John's 3-0 on Saturday afternoon as the Hoyas secured their 13th conference win this season. GU set the program record for most conference wins in a season with today's victory. This is the first time in the past 24 years that the Hoyas have taken a series against St. John's on the road. With the win, GU improves to 34-19 and 13-7 in BIG EAST action while St. John's slides to 34-16-1 and 14-7 in conference play.

ON THE RECORD
"What a great series win for the Hoyas. I thought they kept us at bay at times, but Everett Catlett gave us what we needed tonight and was just dominant. Our pitching staff was excellent with another shutout tying the all-time shutouts in a season record. Georgetown has not beaten St. John's on the road in a very long time and to do that and get our school record 13th BIG EAST win and fifth conference series win, which is the most in school history, was truly remarkable. I am so proud of this group and all we have accomplished. Christian Ficca was special today with four hits and that is what seniors do. He led us today along with Catlett and overall, it was a great team win." - Head Coach Edwin Thompson

HOYA HIGHLIGHTS HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a scoreless first, Georgetown was able to put runners on the corners with no outs after back-to-back singles from Castillo and Caster. GU was then able to load the bases with one out but was unable to bring any of the runners home keeping the score at 0-0 heading into the bottom half of the frame. Catlett was dealing early, retiring the first six batters he faced.
  • In the third, GU was able to put runners on the corners with two outs but were unable to bring any of the runners home. Catlett retired the first nine batters of the game in order as the score remained 0-0.
  • The fourth and fifth frames were scoreless for both sides. GU was able to put a runner in scoring position in the sixth but once again was unable to bring the runner home as the Red Storm defense fended off the Hoya offense.
  • In the seventh, neither side was able to break the deadlock as the score remained 0-0 heading into the eighth.
  • Georgetown's offense came to life in the eighth as GU was able to bring a runner home on an error by the Johnnies. After scoring on a wild pitch, GU had runners on the corners with two outs. Ficca laced his fourth hit of the day through the left side scoring another for the Hoyas as GU took the 3-0 lead into the bottom half of the inning.
