No. 16/11 Hoyas Travel to Maryland for DMV Derby

WASHINGTON - The No. 16/11 Georgetown University men's soccer team will make the short trip to College Park, Maryland to take on the University of Maryland Terrapins on Sunday evening at Ludwig Field Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on the B1G+.

About the Hoyas
  • Georgetown (0-0-1) fell 2-0 at the University of Pittsburgh on Thursday evening in both squads' season opener.
  • The Hoyas looked dangerous in the second half, but could not find the back of the net.
  • Georgetown was picked first in the BIG EAST Conference East Division Preseason Coaches Poll as the Hoyas were awarded 66 points and 11 first place votes.
  • Senior Maximus Jennings was named the Preseason BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year, and graduate student Marlon Tabora as well as junior Zach Zengue joined Jennings on the Preseason All-BIG EAST squad. Tabora was a unanimous selection.
  • The Hoyas are currently ranked No. 16 in the United Soccer Coaches Preseason Poll and No. 11 in the TopDrawerSoccer Preseason Poll.
  • Freshman Mitchell Baker was named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com Freshman Preseason Best XI Team yesterday.
  • Junior Diego Letayf was selected as a second-year captain, while seniors Jennings and Blaine Mabie joined him being selected by the coaching staff and their teammates to lead the 2024 squad as captains.
  • This season, Georgetown will face six teams that appeared in the 2023 NCAA Championship including two that finished the season ranked among the top 25.

  • Maryland opened the season with a 1-1 draw at UMBC on Thursday evening in the season opener.
  • Luke van Heukelum scored the game's first goal in the 84th minute to put Maryland ahead. However, UMBC responded two minutes later with a timely header goal by Joseph Picotto.
  • Graduate student midfielder Alex Nitzl, graduate student center back Bjarne Thiesen and senior William Kulvik were named Big Ten Players to Watch.
  • The Terps picked up a pair of home exhibition victories over Rider and Old Dominion in the lead-up to the 2024 campaign.
