Georgetown Football Hosts Columbia in Lou Little Trophy Game

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University football team will be back on the Hilltop to take on Columbia in a battle for the Lou Little Trophy on Saturday, September 28. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. on Cooper Field.

ABOUT THE HOYAS
  • The Hoyas fell to 2-2 on the season after a 26-14 loss to Brown on Homecoming at Cooper Field last Saturday. 
  • Cam Pygatt received a Patriot League Honorable Mention for his effort in the matchup. The senior led the receivers with six catches for 116 yards and one touchdown. Pygatt made the longest catch of the afternoon for a career-high 77 yards to earn the Hoyas their second touchdown of the contest. 
  • Cooper Blomstrom leads the Patriot League with 7.5 TFLs averaging 1.88 per game. 
  • Georgetown is third in the FCS with 15 sacks. David Ealey III is tied for first in the league with 3.5 sacks followed by Blomstrom who is in second with three. GianCarlo Rufo and Cole Pascucci each have two while Isaac Saffold has 1.5. 
  • Mason Gudger currently leads the FCS in kickoff return yardage, averaging 45.5 yards per return.
  • Naieem Kearney leads the Blue & Gray's ground game with a league-leading six rushing touchdowns. The running back has rushed for 284 yards on 51 attempts.
  • Patrick Ryan's field goal percentage is tied for first in the FCS, going 4-4 through four games. Ryan also leads the league with a 13-13 PAT record. 
ABOUT THE LIONS
  • Columbia opened up its 2024 season last Saturday with a 31-20 win over then-No. 14/18 Lafayette.
  • After the Lion win, Bryson Canty was named Ivy League Offensive Player of the Week and Keller Patterson was named Rookie of the Week. 
  • In December of 2023, Jon Poppe was named the 22nd head coach in program history. Poppe spent the 2023 season as the head coach of Union College. 
ABOUT THE MATCHUP
  • Georgetown and Columbia will meet for the 11th time in program history. The Hoyas are 3-7 against the Lions. 
  • The Lou Little Trophy began in 2015 and was last won by the Lions in 2023 to gain a 5-3 record. 
  • The Hoyas earned the inaugural trophy in 2015 and most recently following a 24-10 victory in 2019. 
  • Lou Little is a Hall of Fame coach who spent time at both institutions. Little arrived on the Hilltop in 1924 and helped bring Georgetown football into the modern era. Little spent six seasons on the Hilltop, winning 41 games, as the head football coach and athletics director. His .759 win percentage is still the highest among GU head coaches who have coached more than 20 games. Little mentored three All-Americans OL/DL Harry Connaughton (1926), center Claude Grigsby (1927) and OL/DL/ punter Jim Mooney (1928). Each went on to be inducted into the Georgetown Athletics Hall of Fame. He took over at Columbia in 1930 and continued his storied career until 1956, posting an additional 110 victories. He was then elected president of the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) and served on the college football rules committee. His successes earned him an induction into the College Football Foundation Hall of Fame in 1960.
