Peavy’s 24 Lifts Georgetown to 64-63 Come-From-Behind Victory at Villanova

VILLANOVA, Pa. – The Georgetown University men's basketball team scored nine unanswered points in the last 4:52, including a game-winning floater from Micah Peavy with 1.8 seconds left on the clock to defeat the Villanova University Wildcats 64-63 at Finneran Pavilion on Monday. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 13-6 on the season and 4-4 in BIG EAST play while the Wildcats slide to 12-8 and 5-4 in conference action.

ON THE RECORD
"First and foremost, I really appreciate playing on Martin Luther King Day. It is something that is so special and is something that we asked for. To have it on this day, coming off losing four in a row and every single game is a close game and we're trying to get over the hump. It's the first time we've played with basically our starters --- the last time we had that group on the floor together like that was Dec. 14 at Syracuse. We've gone through some ups and downs and it's the rigors of the Big East, right? Dixon is a load. I mean a load. He can score in every imaginable way. I thought his last shot was going to go in. I'm really proud of our men's resilience. Today was a resilient win, today was a culture win, today was a program win. I've coached in the Big East for many years. I don't know how many times I've won in this building as an assistant coach or a head coach. To be down the way we were, with things not going our way, for our men to fight back, I think we had nine straight stops on the defensive side of the ball. We still have to try to get to 70. I think the last time we had 70 was against Creighton. Our offense has to do a better job. You can see how rusty Tommy was. He normally makes all those layups. And a little bit of rust came off of Epps. It's good to have Tommy come home. He played well. And obviously Peavy showed some incredible leadership today. Really, really good leadership. Just a great team win and to do it on Martin Luther King Day means more to me than any of you will ever understand. Those opportunities weren't there to coaches, players, people without that vision, without that love and compassion for humanity. So MLK, I appreciate you bro." - Head Coach Ed Cooley

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The home team struck first but the Hoyas answered right back with a Sorber layup followed by a Peavy triple to take the early 5-3 lead. Trading points, the lead went back and forth before Villanova pulled ahead by five (23-18) with 7:15 to play.
  • A 7-2 run fueled by five points from Peavy and a pair from Sorber swung the advantage back to the Blue & Gray, 25-24 (4:20). However, an 8-0 run from the Wildcats, including six from Longino, gave VU the 32-25 lead.
  • A layup from Epps made it a two-possession game but a jumper with just seconds on the clock sent the squads into the locker room with the 'Cats up 34-27.
  • Villanova came out hot in the second half, extending the gap to as many as 13 (42-29) early. However, the Hoyas continued to chip away. A 6-0 run over 39 seconds fueled by free throws from Sorber, a Caleb Williams bucket from the Sorber dish and an Epps layup off the turnover, made it a two-possession game.
  • Villanova was not deterred, reeling off seven straight on the other end and securing the double-digit lead once again. Back-to-back Epps 3-pointers made it a two-possession game again before the teams traded treys back and forth.
  • Another 'Nova jumper at 4:52 gave the home team an eight-point advantage (63-55). Clutch free throws from Sorber were followed by the traditional three-point play from Malik Mack, his first points of the game, to make it a one-possession game with 1:24 to play.
  • Georgetown forced a late VU turnover as Peavy's steal turned into a fastbreak layup to make it a one-point game with 48 ticks on the clock. The stifling GU defense came up with another stop to give the Hoyas possession once again. With 1.8 seconds remaining, Peavy drained a bucket to push the Hoyas ahead for the first time in the second half. One more defensive stop on the other end provided the 64-63 score at the final whistle.
