PROVIDENCE, R.I.. – Despite career games from
Micah Peavy and
Thomas Sorber, the Georgetown University men's basketball team couldn't fend off a fiery Providence College Friar squad, falling 78-68 at Amica Mutual Pavilion on Saturday afternoon. With the setback, Georgetown is 13-7 on the season and 4-5 in BIG EAST play while Providence improves to 10-10 on the year with a 4-5 mark in league action.
ON THE RECORD
"I thought the energy that we played with was good, not great. This was the first game we played all year where I thought our defense let us down. I don't think we were gritty and I thought that Providence was tougher. They played really well defensively. We have a really, really quick turnaround on Tuesday. This has been a marathon of games, as we were the first bye in the BIG EAST, so we have not had a stretch where we can get healthy. Georgetown is going to continue to get better, continue to improve, and slowly but surely that wagon is coming."
- Head Coach
Ed Cooley
"I just tried to stay focused and stick to the game plan. I know they were throwing multiple bigs at me, but I was trying not to mind that. I? was just trying to stick to the game plan and do whatever Coach Cooley told me to do." -
Thomas Sorber
HOYA HIGHLIGHTS
- Peavy led all scorers with a career-best 27 points on 12-for-19 shooting from the floor in a full 40 minutes of action.
- Sorber followed closely, matching his career high with 25 points on 10-of-17 shooting to go along with 15 rebounds for his seventh double-double of the season. He added three blocks to his line for the day.
- Malik Mack paced GU's offense with three helpers.
- The Hoyas shot 46.7% (28-for-60) from the floor and 30.8% (4-for-13) from behind the arc.
- The Blue & Gray was outrebounded 37-32 on the glass.
PROVIDENCE HIGHLIGHTS
- Jayden Pierre and Joseph Bensley led the Friar offense tallying 14 points apiece. Jabri Abdur-Rahim, Corey Floyld Jr. and Oswin Erhunmwunse rounded out those in double figures with 12, 11 and 10, respectively.
- Erhunwunse and Bensley led on the boards grabbing six rebounds each while Floyd Jr. paced the offense with five assists.
- The Friars shot 28-for-62 (45.2%) from the floor and 7-for-22 (31.8%) from beyond the arc.
- Providence led on the glass, grabbing 37 rebounds, including 16 on the offensive end leading to 20 second-chance points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Hoyas came out firing with Sorber tacking on a quick five points behind a triple and a jumper. Despite Providence tallying four on the other end, Georgetown staged a 13-3 run fueled by six from Peavy and another five from Sorber to take the 18-7 advantage and forcing the PC timeout.
- GU continued to pour the points in as a Mack stepback 3-pointer pushed the Blue & Gray ahead by as many as 12 (23-11) but the Friars would not go away.
- A 21-6 run from the home team gave Providence the 34-31 lead before a Sorber bucket ended the run and made it a one-point game. PC would tally two more buckets sending the squads into the locker room with the home team leading 38-33.
- The Friars came out hot, building the lead to seven (44-37) before eight unanswered, including a pair of buckets from Peavy, pushed the Hoyas back on top 45-44. It was short lived as PC would regain the lead and build back up to as many as 10 (68-58) with 4:05 remaining. Georgetown would reel off another seven unanswered including a Peavy triple, free throws from Sorber and Drew Fielder's first bucket of the game, to make it a one-possession game (68-65). However, that was as close as the Hoyas would get as free throws on the other end provided the 78-68 score at the final whistle.
OF NOTE
- Peavy's 27 was a career high, eclipsing his previous high of 26 set on February 17, 2024 at Kansas State.
- Sorber matched his career high of 25 points, which he set in the second game of the season on November 9, 2025 in a win against Fairfield.
- Pulling down 15 rebounds, Sorber set a new career best. His previous best was 13, a feat he has achieved three times this season, most recently at Marquette on January 7.
