Georgetown Heads to Providence to Face Friars in a Saturday Afternoon Matchup

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University men's basketball team will be back in action on Saturday, January 25 as the Hoyas travel to Providence, Rhode Island to face the Providence College Friars at Amica Mutual Pavilion. Tipoff is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on FOX. Georgetown enters Saturday's contest with a 13-6 record overall and a 4-4 mark in league action following a thrilling 64-63 come-from-behind win against Villanova on Monday night at Finneran Pavilion. Saturday's contest marks Head Coach Ed Cooley's second trip to Providence as the head coach of Georgetown. Cooley was the head coach of the Friars for 12 seasons prior to his arrival at Georgetown.

ABOUT THE HOYAS
  • On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the Hoyas scored nine unanswered points in the last 4:52, including a game-winning floater from Micah Peavy with 1.8 seconds left to defeat Villanova 64-63 at Finneran Pavilion. Peavy led a trio of Hoyas who combined for 54 of GU's 64 points. Peavy finished the contest with 24 points while Thomas Sorber and Jayden Epps rounded out those in double figures with 15 points apiece.
  • Sorber leads a quartet of Hoyas averaging double figures posting 14.2 ppg, a mark that ranks 14th in the BIG EAST. Peavy chips in 13.9 ppg, followed by Malik Mack (13.3 ppg) and Jayden Epps (13.3 ppg). Georgetown and Villanova are the only institutions with four players among the top 30 in scoring in the league.
  • Sorber leads the squad on the glass managing 8.7 rpg, which leads the league, followed by Fielder (5.8 rpg) and Peavy (5.3 rpg).
  • Mack paces the offense dishing out 4.6 apg with Peavy behind him at 3.5 apg.
  • Peavy is tied for 24th in the country and ranks second in the BIG EAST in steals per game, picking 2.32 pockets per game.
  • Sorber has six double-doubles to his name, tied for first in the league. The six double-doubles is tied for the national lead among freshmen with Cooper Flagg (Duke), Ace Bailey (Rutgers), Jayden Quaintance (Arizona State) and Donnie Freeman (Syracuse).
  • Defensively, the team leads the BIG EAST and ranks 15th in the nation in field goal percentage defense (38.7%). The Hoyas are third in the league in steals per game (8.3) and are forcing opponents to commit 14.2 turnovers per game, which ranks third in the conference.
  • In conference games, Georgetown is fourth in the BE in field goal percentage, boasting an impressive 45.8% shooting efficiency.
 
ABOUT THE FRIARS
  • In its most recent outing, Providence (9-10, 3-5 BE) was on the short end of a tight contest with Villanova, falling 75-73 on January 17 in Philadelphia. Bensley Joseph led a quartet of Friars in double figures with 23 points followed by Corey Floyd Jr. (18), Justyn Fernandez (15) and Jabri Abdur-Rahim (10). Oswin Erhunmwunse led PC on the glass pulling down eight boards while Joseph followed closely with seven. Jayden Pierre paced the offense with seven assists.
  • PC shot 42.9% (24-56) from the field, while knocking down a season-best 13 shots from behind the arc.
  • Pierre leads a trio of Friars averaging double figures posting 12.6 ppg, followed closely by Joseph (12.3 ppg) and Wesley Cardet Jr. (10.2 ppg).
  • Erhunmwunse leads Providence on the glass grabbing 5.7 rpg, followed by Ryan Mela (5.1 rpg).
  • Joseph paces the offense, dishing out 2.8 apg, followed closely by Pierre with 2.7 apg.
  • Providence is led by Kim English, who is in his second season at the helm of the Friars.
 
ABOUT THE SERIES WITH PROVIDENCE
  • Saturday's matchup will be the 85th all-time meeting between the two teams dating back to the 1955-56 season.
