Hoyas to Face Providence in BIG EAST Semifinal

WASHINGTON - The top-seeded Georgetown University men's soccer team will open its BIG EAST Championship with a semifinal match against the fourth-seeded Providence College Friars on Thursday at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds, Maryland. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+ with Anthony Mazzini and Monika Moore calling the action.

About the Hoyas
  • Georgetown (10-3-4) is coming off of a 2-2 draw at Providence on Friday in the regular season finale.
  • The Hoyas led 2-0, but PC answered with a pair of late goals to secure a BIG EAST Championship berth.
  • On Wednesday, Zach Zengue was named the BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year when the conference announced its yearly honors. Additionally, the coaching staff was named the BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year.
  • Zengue was also a unanimous selection to the first team, sophomore Mitchell Baker was another unanimous First Team All-BIG EAST honoree, while junior Eric Howard also earned a spot on the first team.
  • Graduate student captain Diego Letayf was a Second Team All-BIG EAST selection. The third team included senior Tenzing Manske as well as junior Matthew Van Horn.
  • Zengue is leading the squad in scoring with 13 goals and nine assists for 35 points on the season. He is sixth in the nation in total goals, and is third in the country in points.
  • Baker is second in goals with nine on the season to go along with two assists for 20 points, while Van Horn is second on the squad in assists with six. 
  • Manske has played 1,530 minutes in goal and has a 0.76 goals-against average as well as eight total shutouts and 34 saves.
  • The Hoyas are currently ranked No. 11 nationally in the United Soccer Coaches Poll and sit at No. 18 in the RPI.
About the Friars
  • Providence is currently 6-6-3 overall and earned the fourth seed in the tournament with the draw on Friday out of a three-way tie for second place in the East Division.
  • In Friday's contest, Angelo Ventrella scored both goals for the Friars to ensure the tourney berth.
  • Providence is led by Sam Montalto who has five goals and three assists for 13 points on the season.
  • Pearse O'Brien has a squad-best six helpers for the year.
Tournament Information
  • The Hoyas are 25-15-5 all-time against the Friars, and 5-1-1 in the BIG EAST Tournament.
  • The squads have met in the semifinals on two occasions (2018, 2013) with the Hoyas going 1-0-1 in those meetings.
  • Last week, the Hoyas and Friars tied 2-2 in the regular season finale in Rhode Island. GU scored a pair of early goals, but PC answered with two in the second half for the draw and to qualify for the tourney.
  • Georgetown is 27-21-7 in the BIG EAST tourney and 12-7-2 in semifinal matches.
  • Georgetown has qualified for eight of the past nine BIG EAST Tournaments, advancing to and winning the championship in six (2015, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2021, 2024).
