Georgetown Advances to the Third Round of NCAA Championships Over West Virginia in Penalty Kicks

WASHINGTON – The second-seeded Georgetown University women's soccer team tied the seventh-seeded West Virginia Mountaineers 1-1 but advanced in penalty kicks 4-3 on Thursday night at Shaw Field in the second round of the NCAA Championships. With the win, GU will host the Florida State Seminoles in the third round.

Head Coach Dave Nolan
"Wow, I'm really lost for words, and that doesn't happen too often. I mean, first off, it was a really exciting game played by two very good teams, both hoping to prolong their season, certainly a little bit longer. So lot of credit to the West Virginia coaching staff and their kids for playing such a good game. Penalty kick shootouts are always a lottery. You prepare, you train, and then it comes down to people having the nerves to make plays when those plays come along. So I got to give our PK takers a lot of credit for having the bravery and the desire wanting to take those PKs. But in the game itself, we had some chances that we probably could have nicked it. They could have maybe had a couple of chances. So a draw was probably fair over the 90 minutes, and we were certainly happy enough to come through it after the PK's. Now, somehow we got to go get ready and play a very talented, fresh Florida State team on Sunday, but we'll worry about that tomorrow. These kids need to celebrate this. I think it's our fourth time making it into the sweet 16, so we're excited for that."
