WASHINGTON – The second-seeded Georgetown University women's soccer team fell to three-seeded Florida State 3-1 in the third round of the NCAA Championship on Sunday afternoon.
Head Coach Dave Nolan
"We're obviously disappointed not to be moving on. We knew this was going to be a tough game against a Florida State team that's possibly the most talented team in the country. The game itself, I thought we started very brightly. We put them under real pressure. We had a couple of good moments, kind of out of nowhere. They scored, probably against the run of play to put us down 1-0, which was hard to take. But I told the kids, at half time. We just got to make sure we stay in the game. And then we would have our moments, and then we would have to take it. Unfortunately, they scored the second goal, right out of the gate in the second half off a corner kick. But we defended the first ball very well. We just couldn't get to the second ball quick enough, and the kid finished it really well, and then we're down two nothing. And now I'm worried that maybe we don't have the legs to keep running, and maybe kids will start to give up a little bit. But we kept plugging away, and then Mary, got a great goal to put us back in the game at 2-1, we had another wonderful moment in front of goal that could have made it two, and then at that point, then it's kind of like, you know, the next goal was going to decide the game. And unfortunately, they got the third goal off another corner kick. But again, another one that wasn't off the first ball, it was off the second ball. And give them credit, they have so much talent. They have so many ways to score goals. So, good luck to Florida State moving on into the next round. But I'm so proud of our team this year. I thought the kids were magnificent. I thought we raised the bar even more. And now, we'll lick our wounds for about 24 hours and have a bit of a soak, and then we start realizing what a great season it was. Then we all start looking towards next year and trying to go one step further next year."
