Georgetown to Face UCF in NCAA Second Round

WASHINGTON - The seventh-seeded Georgetown University men's soccer team will face University of Central Florida Knights in the NCAA Second Round on Sunday at Shaw Field. Kickoff is slated for 5 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+ with Georgetown men's soccer alums Dan Helfrich and Tom Greaser back in the booth for their 21st season.

About the Hoyas
  • The Hoyas won the program's seventh BIG EAST Championship on Sunday afternoon defeating the third-seeded UConn Huskies, 3-1. It marked back-to-back titles for the Blue & Gray for the first time since 2017-19.
  • Junior Mateo Ponce Ocampo was named the tournament Most Outstanding Offensive Player as well as to the BIG EAST All-Tournament Team, while sophomore Tate Lampman earned Most Outstanding Defensive honors as well as a spot on the all-tourney squad.
  • Sophomore Mitchell Baker and junior Eric Howard were also recognized as members of the BIG EAST All-Tournament squad.
  • Senior Zach Zengue was named the BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year when the conference announced its yearly honors. Additionally, the coaching staff was named the BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year.
  • Zengue was also a unanimous selection to the first team, Baker was another unanimous First Team All-BIG EAST honoree, while Howard also earned a spot on the first team.
  • Graduate student captain Diego Letayf was a Second Team All-BIG EAST selection. The third team included senior Tenzing Manske as well as junior Matthew Van Horn.
  • Zengue is leading the squad in scoring with 13 goals and 12 assists for 38 points on the season. He is eighth in the nation in total goals, third in assists and fourth in the country in points.
  • Baker is second in goals with 11 on the season to go along with three assists for 21 points. His 11 goals rank him second in the BIG EAST and 18th in the nation.
  • Manske has played 1,575 minutes in goal and has a 0.74 goals-against average as well as nine total shutouts and 43 saves.
About the Knights
  • UCF earned its 10th NCAA Championship bid in program history by defeating Marshall to win its first-ever Sun Belt Conference championship.
  • In the first round of the NCAA Championship, the Knights defeated Florida Atlantic 3-2 to advance to the second round.
  • UCF scored a pair of first half goals, but FAU answered with one early in the second half. The Knights would regain the lead just three minutes later, and a late score wasn't enough as Central Florida picked up its first NCAA victory since the spring of 2021.

Tournament Notes
  • Georgetown's NCAA Tournament berth is the 14th under Head Coach Brian Wiese.
  • The Hoyas have been to the tournament on 15 previous occasions with nine trips to the Round of 16 (2021, 2020, 2019, 2018, 2015, 2014, 2013, 2012, 1997) and five to the quarterfinals (2021, 2020, 2019, 2014, 2012).
  • The Hoyas won the national championship in 2019, downing Virginia in penalty kicks.
  • GU's last trip to the College Cup was in 2021 when the squad fell to the University of Washington 2-1 in the national semifinal.
  • In 2012, the squad was the national runner up, falling to Indiana 1-0 in the national championship game.
  • Prior to that season, the program had never moved beyond the second round of the tournament.
  • The Hoyas are 19-11-6 overall in the NCAA Tournament.
  • This is the 12th time the Hoyas have earned a seeding in the tournament, it is the first seven seed in program history.
