Seventh-Seeded Georgetown to Face 10th-Seeded High Point in NCAA Third Round

WASHINGTON - The seventh-seeded Georgetown University men's soccer team will host the 10th-seeded High Point University Panthers in the NCAA Third Round on Saturday at Shaw Field. Kickoff is slated for 5 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+ with Georgetown men's soccer alums Dan Helfrich and Tom Greaser back in the booth for their 21st season.

About the Hoyas
  • Following a first-round bye, the Hoyas (13-3-4) defeated the University of Central Florida 2-0 on Sunday evening at Shaw Field.
  • Sophomore Mitchell Baker scored the brace for the Blue & Gray in GU's 11th shutout of the season.
  • The Hoyas earned an automatic tournament berth after winning the program's seventh BIG EAST Championship defeating the third-seeded UConn Huskies, 3-1. It marked back-to-back titles for the Blue & Gray for the first time since 2017-19.
  • Senior Zach Zengue was named the BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year when the conference announced its yearly honors. Additionally, the coaching staff was named the BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year.
  • Zengue was also a unanimous selection to the first team, Baker was another unanimous First Team All-BIG EAST honoree, while junior Eric Howard also earned a spot on the first team.
  • Graduate student captain Diego Letayf was a Second Team All-BIG EAST selection. The third team included senior Tenzing Manske as well as junior Matthew Van Horn.
  • Zengue is leading the squad in scoring with 13 goals and 12 assists for 38 points on the season. He is ninth in the nation in total goals, third in assists and fourth in the country in points.
  • Baker is second in goals with 13 on the season to go along with three assists for 29 points. His 13 goals rank him ninth in the nation as well.
  • Manske has played 1,665 minutes in goal and has a 0.76 goals-against average as well as 10 total shutouts and 47 saves.
About the Panthers
  • High Point (14-1-4) is on a historic run as the squad defeated the West Virginia Mountaineers 3-2 on Sunday evening in the program's first-ever NCAA Second Round game.
  • The Panthers led 3-0, but allowed a pair of goals from West Virginia to make a game of it late.
  • Daniel Lugo leads the offense with 14 goals on the season to go along with five assists for 33 points on the year.
  • HPU earned a tournament berth and the No. 10 seed after winning the Big South Conference Championship with a 3-0 victory over Gardner-Webb.
  • High Point has not lost since October 8 when the squad fell to UNC Greensboro by a score of 2-0. It was the team's lone loss of the season.
Series Info
  • Georgetown holds a 1-1-1 record against the Panthers with a 0-0-1 record at home. The squads have never met in the postseason.
  • The Hoyas opened the 2025 campaign at High Point but fell 2-1. The Panthers scored a pair of goals before freshman Timothy Logan cut the deficit in half in the 88th minute.
  • The previous meeting at Shaw Field was a 1-1 tie in 2022 as the Hoyas scored early in the second half, but HPU answered five minutes later.
  • The Hoyas and Panthers are two of three teams leading the country in total goals with 48 on the season.
Tournament Notes
  • Georgetown's NCAA Tournament berth is the 14th under Head Coach Brian Wiese. The Hoyas have been to the tournament on 15 previous occasions with 10 trips to the Round of 16 (2025, 2021, 2020, 2019, 2018, 2015, 2014, 2013, 2012, 1997) and five to the quarterfinals (2021, 2020, 2019, 2014, 2012).
  • The Hoyas won the national championship in 2019, downing Virginia in penalty kicks.
  • GU's last trip to the College Cup was in 2021 when the squad fell to the University of Washington 2-1 in the national semifinal. In 2012, the squad was the national runner up, falling to Indiana 1-0 in the national championship game. Prior to that season, the program had never moved beyond the second round of the tournament.
  • The Hoyas are 20-11-6 overall in the NCAA Tournament.
  • This is the 12th time the Hoyas have earned a seeding in the tournament. It is the first seven seed in program history.
