Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Georgetown Stifles Maryland 70-60 in College Park

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – With a stifling defense that limited the home team to just 13 field goals, the Georgetown University men's basketball team defeated the University of Maryland Terrapins 70-60 on Friday night at XFINITY Center in College Park. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 2-0 on the season while Maryland slips to 1-1 on the year.

ON THE RECORD
"I thought it was a really aggressive game. I thought both teams were very physical, both defensive-minded.The energy in here was outstanding. I'm really excited about this game. So, you know, hopefully we can continue this series. I'm excited to have this game next year at Capital One Arena. I thought our men were prepared from jump, you know, our preparation, I thought leading up to the game was spectacular. I thought our players were very, very mature. Going back to how we got to this point, putting our guys in a hostile situation at Kentucky, at GW, and the GLOBL JAM really prepared us for this. It gave us some chemistry, some unison, and even though we got in foul trouble, a little banged up, I was really proud of our cohesive unit. They got it to six or seven, and I think we matched with back-to-back baskets. It got and I don't think we were shaken at all. I thought we had a really mature group, the two guys at the dais with us. I thought they were outstanding the whole game. I thought the player of the game today was Caleb, really, really happy for his growth and for us to be a competitive team. His growth is very, very important. Very, very important."
- Head Coach Ed Cooley on the game

"It means a lot. You know, take pride in where you are from, which I'm really big on. I grew up watching both Maryland and Georgetown. So I watched them play each other when I was younger as well. Maryland won both times. I grew up a Georgetown fan, so even though I got the M on my arm, I'm from Maryland, but I'm a Georgetown fan. Getting one back with Georgetown feels really good." - Malik Mack

"In the first half, I feel like I just got three fouls that were all my mistakes. I knew in the second half that I had to be more smart. I got a lot of dumb fouls in the first half. So just eliminating those dumb fouls, so that when I actually need to go be physical and contest shots, I can do that without having to worry about the foul trouble." - Caleb Williams

HOYA HIGHLIGHTS
  • Malik Mack led a trio of Hoyas in double figures and tied a game best with 19 points on five made baskets, including a trio of triples, to go along with a perfect 6-for-6 performance from the free throw line. He added eight rebounds and tied for a game best with a pair of steals.
  • KJ Lewis tallied 16 points on 5-for-12 shooting (41.7%) while adding nine rebounds for a near double-double, while chipping in a trio of assists.
  • Caleb Williams tallied his first double-double of the season with 14 points on an efficient 5-for-8 performance (62.5%) front he floor, while grabbing a team-best 10 boards. The sophomore was one of a trio of Hoyas to tally a pair of blocks.
  • Julius Halifonua dished out a game-best four assists to pace the Hoya offense.
  • The Hoyas tallied 11 blocks on the night for the second-consecutive game led by three from Vincent Iwuchukwu and a pair each from Caleb Williams, Halaifonua and Jayden Fort.
  • Georgetown forced 13 Maryland turnovers on six steals while committing 11 of their own.
  • Georgetown shot 39.6% (21-53) for the game and the GU defense held the Terrapins to a paltry 25.0% (13-52) for the game.
  • The Hoyas narrowly won the battle on the glass, outrebounding Maryland 41-40.

MARYLAND HIGHLIGHTS
  • Myles Rice led a trio of Terrapins in double figures with a game-best-tying 19 points, followed by Pharrel Payne (17) and David Coit (10).
  • Payne pulled down a game-best 11 rebounds for a double-double while his pair of assists paced the offense. He added a pair of blocks to his line.
  • The Terps were limited to a mere 13 made field goals but made up a bulk of their points from the charity stripe with a 30-for-37 performance from the free throw line.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Hoyas jumped out to a quick start, piling on 11 unanswered sparked by a traditional three-point play from Julius Halaifonua. A pair of Mack free throws were followed up by a duo of Lewis layups and the run was capped by an emphatic dunk from Isaiah Abraham to force Maryland to call a timeout.
  • The Terps were able to keep the lead to single digits with trips to the free throw line but the Hoyas continued to maintain some distance. Five straight from UMD made it a two-possession game (19-14) before a Caleb Williams jumper followed by a DeShawn Harris-Smith bucket gave the Hoyas some breathing room.
  • The hometown crowd got loud once again as the hosts closed the game to four (25-21) with 3:32 on the clock, but a pair of Mack free throws extended the gap to six.
  • As both teams struggled from the floor, trips to the free throw line for both squads pushed the Hoya lead to eight before a Maryland triple sent the squads into the locker room with Georgetown up 32-27.
  • The second half started much like the first with the Blue & Gray opening on a 14-2 run after Mack drained a pair of triples to spark the spurt. Lewis' fastbreak bucket was followed by a Mack layup before Caleb Williams strung together four on a triple and a free throw to balloon GU's lead to 46-29.
  • Georgetown built the lead to as many as 20 (50-30) but the Terps put together a 9-1 run to diminish the advantage to 12. As the Hoyas put out different lineups, it would be a Lewis driving layup paired with a Caleb Williams dunk to push the lead back to 14 (57-43, 7:12) before UMD put together a 7-1 spurt to take the lead back to single digits (58-50).
  • Lewis drained a triple to silence the raucous Maryland crowd but back-to-back buckets from Maryland's Myles Rice brought the hometown fans right back to life as the gap was closed to seven (61-54).
  • The Hoyas looked to none other than Mack for the clutch 3-pointer to push the lead back up to 10 (66-56) as the Hoyas staved off the Maryland comeback.

OF NOTE
  • Putting up another strong performance inside, the Hoyas tallied 30 points in the paint to UMD's 16. It is the second-straight game for 30+ points after managing 38 against Morgan State in the season opener.
  • With the win, Georgetown snapped Maryland's 49-game home-opener win streak, dating back to the 1976-77 season.
  • Maryland's 25.0% shooting night was its worst at home since managing 22.4% in a 63-58 loss to Miami on January 10, 2007.
  • The game marked Georgetown's best field goal percentage defense performance on the road since holding Creighton to 20.8% shooting in a 67-40 win on January 31, 2015.
