Georgetown Men’s Basketball Travels to Face North Carolina in Chapel Hill

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University men's basketball team is set to travel to Chapel Hill, North Carolina to face the No. 16/17 University of North Carolina Tar Heels on Sunday, December 7 on the road. Tipoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the Smith Center

ABOUT THE HOYAS
  • The 2025-26 season marks the third year under Head Coach Ed Cooley. In his second season, Cooley guided Georgetown to doubling its wins from the season before and finishing with an overall record of 18-16 and 8-12 in BIG EAST play. The squad earned a bid to the inaugural College Basketball Crown, advancing to the quarterfinals before falling to eventual Crown Champions Nebraska.
  • In the last outing, Georgetown defeated UMBC 90-81 on Wednesday evening in the District. All starters scored in double figures, led by Caleb Williams with 18 points on 50.0% shooting along with eight rebounds, two assists and a steal. KJ Lewis added 17 points on 7-for-14 shooting plus five boards, four assists and a steal, while Julius Halaifonua matched his career highs with 16 points, nine rebounds and four assists. Malik Mack contributed 15 points on 6-for-10 shooting, a team-best seven assists and a game-high three steals, and Isaiah Abraham rounded out the balanced effort with 11 points on 57.1% shooting and a perfect 2-for-2 at the stripe.
  • A quartet of Hoyas are scoring in double figures led by Lewis who is tallying 16.6 ppg, while Mack averages 16.5 ppg, C. Williams manages 12.8 ppg and Vince Iwuchukwu notches 11.8 ppg. Lewis' 16.6 ppg ranks fifth in the BIG EAST Conference.
  • Lewis leads the Hoyas on the glass with 6.0 rpg, followed by C. Williams with 5.9 rpg and Julius Halaifonua with 4.9 rpg.
  • Mack paces the offense with 4.6 apg, which ranks fourth in the league, followed by Lewis with 3.1 apg and Jeremiah Williams with 2.8 apg.
  • Lewis leads the BIG EAST and the Hoyas in strips with 2.5 spg while Kayvaun Mulready tallies 1.6 spg. Georgetown is tied for third in the conference with 8.25 spg.
  • Before the start of the 2025-26 season, Lewis was named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Second Team and Mack was named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Third Team. The Hoyas were also selected sixth in the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll.
 
ABOUT THE No. 16/17 TAR HEELS
  • North Carolina, ranked No. 16 in the Associated Press Poll and 17 in the USA Today Coaches Poll, enters the matchup with a 7-1 start to the 2025-26 season.
  • The Tar Heels closed the 2024-25 season with a 23-14 record and a 13-7 mark in ACC action.
  • In its last outing, UNC defeated the University of Kentucky, 67-64, on Tuesday evening at Rupp Arena in Lexington, Kentucky. Junior Henri Veesaar led the Tar Heels with 17 points and 10 rebounds for the double-double. Freshman Caleb Wilson also had 15 points and a game-high 12 rebounds for another double-double, while junior Luka Bogavac added 12 points.
  • Wilson leads Carolina in points averaging 19.2 ppg, Veesaar follows with 14.5 ppg and Bogavac rounds out the Tar Heels, averaging 12.0 ppg.
  • Wilson leads UNC on the glass with 10.1 rpg, while Veesaar manages 8.5 rpg and Seth Trimble averages 5.0 rpg.
  • Ryan Evans paces the Tar Heel offense averaging 4.0 assists per game.
  • North Carolina is led by Head Coach Hubert Davis in his fifth season.
 
ABOUT THE SERIES
  • Georgetown and North Carolina will meet for the 10th time in program history, with the Hoyas holding a narrow 5-4 edge in the series.
  • The last meeting between the two teams was March 25, 2007 with the Blue & Gray taking the 96-84 win in overtime in the NCAA East Regional final. Jeff Green led the Hoyas with 22 points and nine rebounds on 10-for-17 shooting while DaJuan Summers scored 20 points and Jonathan Wallace added 19. Roy Hibbert posted a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds on 6-for-10 shooting. After a Wallace triple tied the game at 81 to force overtime, the Hoyas reeled off 14 unanswered to start the overtime and outscored the Tar Heels 15-3 in the extra frame to advance to the 2007 Final Four.
  • Cooley maintains a 0-2 record against UNC.
  • The Hoyas hold a 175-154 record against the Atlantic Coast Conference while Cooley is 12-21 against the conference.
  • The Hoyas are 9-8 all-time against AP No. 16. The last win against the 16th-ranked squad was a road win on March 9, 2019 at Marquette to close the regular season. James Akinjo (25) and Mac McClung (23) combined for 48 points with Jessie Govan and Jamorko Pickett each adding 10 apiece as the Hoyas defeated the Golden Eagles 86-84 at Fiserv Forum.
