WASHINGTON – Georgetown University's men's lacrosse team kicked off the 2025 season with a 13-6 victory over visiting Loyola on Saturday at Cooper Field. The 11th-ranked Hoyas improve to 1-0 on the year while the Greyhounds fall to 0-1.
Hoya Highlights
- Joe Cesare and Kevin Miller both posted hat tricks for Georgetown while Fulton Bayman added two goals and two assists.
- Aidan Carroll posted a goal with two assists and Kade Goldberg chipped in a goal and an assist.
- Patrick Crogan, Jack Ransom and Ben Firlie each had one goal while Jordan Wray dished out a pair of assists and Shuey Kelly had another.
- Ross Prince was dominant at the dot in his collegiate debut, winning 16 of 20 (.800) faceoffs and collecting five ground balls. Prince won the first 13 faceoffs of the game, including every faceoff in the first half.
- Defensively, Anderson Moore hauled in 14 saves and posted a .700 save percentage. He allowed just two goals in the final 45 minutes of action as the Hoyas blanked Loyola in both the second and fourth quarters.
- Seamus Foley was credited with two caused turnovers and had two ground balls while Charlie McGurrin added four ground balls and Joe Vranizan collected three.
- Georgetown's man down defense was locked in, allowing just one goal on five Loyola EMO chances.
How it Happened
- Despite winning all six faceoffs in the opening frame, the Hoyas found themselves in a 4-1 deficit after 15 minutes thanks mostly to nine turnovers in the frame. Loyola scored first at the 10:18 mark before the Hoyas responded less than a minute later with Goldberg's goal to even things up. The Greyhounds closed out the stanza with a 3-0 run, capped by their lone extra-man goal of the game.
- Settling down, the Hoyas cut their miscues offensively and clamped down defensively in the second quarter. Georgetown only allowed two Loyola shots in the frame while committing just one turnover. Two goals from Miller, and one each from Carroll and Cesare, put the Hoyas ahead 5-4 with just under two minutes remaining in the half – a lead they would not relinquish the rest of the way.
- Coming out of halftime, the Blue & Gray netted a pair of early goals from Cesare and Bayman to lead 7-4 but Loyola responded with back-to-back goals to make it a one-goal game at 7-6 with 5:47 to play. The Greyhounds wouldn't score again the rest of the day as GU closed out the third quarter with three straight goals, capped by a top corner rip from Cesare that literally tore through the goal netting.
- Georgetown continued to stifle their guests in the fourth, outscoring Loyola 3-0 to close out the 13-6 victory with goals from Corgan, Firlie and Miller.
Loyola Notes
- Matthew Minicus led the Greyhounds with two goals and two assists while Henry Haberman had two goals and an assist.
- Defensively, Remi Reynolds had three caused turnovers and three ground balls on the day.
- In goal, Max Watkinson collected 12 saves in the loss.
Georgetown Notes
- February 1 is the earliest regular season game in program history for the Hoyas.
- Georgetown avenges an 18-10 loss to the Greyhounds in the 2024 season opener in Baltimore.
- The win is the 10th all-time for the Hoyas against Loyola, including three of the last four.
- Firlie, Miller and Ransom each scored their first career goals while Bayman netted his first goals as a Hoya.
