Georgetown Men’s Basketball Hosts Providence in Midweek Showdown

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University men's basketball team will host the Providence College Friars at Capital One Arena on Wednesday, February 19. Tipoff in the District is slated for 7 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on FS1 with John Fanta calling the play-by-play and Phil Martelli providing analysis. Georgetown enters Wednesday's contest with a 15-10 record and a 6-8 mark in league action following a 97-86 defeat at Butler on Saturday at Hinkle Fieldhouse.

ABOUT THE HOYAS
  • On Saturday afternoon, Georgetown fell to Butler 97-86 at Hinkle Fieldhouse. Micah Peavy led a quintet of Hoyas in double figures with 21 points on eight made field goals. The graduate student chipped in squad bests of 10 assists, seven rebounds and three steals in the contest. It was his second double-double of the season and the fourth of his career.
  • Peavy leads a quartet of Hoyas averaging double figures posting 15.4 ppg, a mark that is 10th in the BIG EAST. Thomas Sorber chips in 14.5 ppg, followed by Malik Mack (12.8 ppg) and Jayden Epps (12.0 ppg). Georgetown and Marquette are the only institutions with four players among the top 30 in scoring in the league.
  • Sorber leads the squad on the glass pulling down 8.5 rpg, which is second in the league, followed by Peavy (5.4 rpg) and Drew Fielder (5.2 rpg).
  • Mack paces the offense dishing out 4.7 apg, a mark that ranks seventh in the BE.
  • Peavy is tied for 13th in the country and is second in the BIG EAST in steals per game, picking 2.4 pockets per game.
  • Sorber has eight double-doubles to his name, which leads the league. His eight double-doubles is second in the nation among freshmen, behind Derik Queen (Maryland) who has nine. Sorber is just ahead of Ace Bailey (Rutgers), Cooper Flag (Duke) and Elijah Price (Fresno State) who each have seven to their credit.
  • Defensively, the team is second in the league in scoring defense, allowing an average of 66.2 ppg. GU ranks third in the BIG EAST and 42nd in the nation in field goal percentage defense (40.9%). The Hoyas are third in the league in steals per game (8.3) and are forcing opponents to commit 14.20 turnovers per game, which ranks third in the conference.
 
ABOUT THE FRIARS
  • In its most recent outing, Providence (12-14, 6-9 BE) defeated the Villanova Wildcats 75-62 on Saturday evening. Jayden Pierre led the Friar offense with 19 points on 6-for-14 shooting. Bensley Joseph (17), Ryan Mela (12) and Oswin Erhunmwunse (10) rounded out the Friars in double figures. Mela and Joseph paced the offense with six assists apiece. Mela led the quad on the glass pulling down nine rebounds in the contest. Providence shot 52.3% (23-44) from the field.
  • Pierre leads a duo of Friars averaging double figures posting 13.1 ppg, followed by Joseph (13.0 ppg).
  • Erhunmwunse leads Providence on the glass pulling down 5.5 rpg, followed by Mela (5.2 rpg).
  • Pierre paces the offense, dishing out 3.1 apg, followed by Joseph (3.0 apg).
  • Providence is led by Kim English who is in his second season at the helm of the Friars.
 
ABOUT THE SERIES WITH PROVIDENCE
  • Wednesday's matchup will be the second meeting this season and the 86th all-time meeting between the two sides dating back to the 1955-56 season. Georgetown leads 47-38 in the all-time series.
  • In the matchup earlier this season, Peavy poured in a career-best 27 points as he and Sorber combined for 52 in the 78-68 setback at Amica Mutual Pavilion in Providence. Sorber managed a double-double with 15 rebounds as well as adding in a trio of blocks.
  • The Blue & Gray's last victory over Providence was on January 30, 2021 when GU defeated the Friars 73-72 at McDonough Arena.
  • Head Coach Ed Cooley is 0-5 against Providence in his career and is 0-4 all-time against Kim English.
