Peavy’s 30 Leads Four in Double Figures as Hoyas Defeat Providence 93-72

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University men's basketball team put up a season high in a conference matchup to defeat the Providence College Friars 93-72 at Capital One Arena on Wednesday night. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 16-10 overall with a 7-8 mark in BIG EAST play. Providence falls to 12-15 overall with a 6-10 mark in conference action.

ON THE RECORD
"I'm really, really proud of our men. A year ago today, I think we were 1-13 in the league. It's a process to build a program. It's a process to reestablish an identity, getting away from the past and coming into the future. For all the coaches who have taken over these programs, it's not where you're at, it's where you're going. Little by little, we'll continue to show progress, growth and development. I couldn't be more excited to be connected with Lee Reed, and I appreciate him for bringing me here to Georgetown to continue to build this program back to national prominence." - Head Coach Ed Cooley

"I think, for us it was just our fight, we wanted to win this game so bad for Coach Cooley. We all huddled up and we said we weren't going to lose this game. So that was the difference. I think it was our will to win. I think we stepped it up big with the rebounding, and that was one of the reasons why we lost the last game. So I think, yeah, that was a big thing." - Micah Peavy

"That's who I am. I just love basketball so much. With all of the stakes coming into this game, all the stuff behind it, I just wanted to show up for Coach Cooley and I'll continue to show up for my teammates." - Drew Fielder

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Georgetown jumped out to a 7-4 lead fueled by Peavy and Fielder triples. However, Providence staged a 14-6 run, almost exclusively on the back of Bensley Joseph, to take an 18-13 lead.
  • After trading buckets, an Epps driving layup sparked 10 unanswered for the Blue & Gray, fueled by treys from Epps and Malik Mack and capped with a Peavy layup, to give the Hoyas a five-point advantage (25-20, 7:09).
  • The Friars wouldn't go away, clawing back to within one (29-28), but Georgetown closed the frame on a 19-3 run, including a Drew McKenna putback, to take a 48-31 lead into the locker room. Jordan Burks tallied the last six points of the half with a traditional three-point play followed by a buzzer-beating 3-pointer off the offensive board.
  • The Hoyas continued to pile on in the second half, opening on an 11-3 run capped by back-to-back 3-pointers from Epps and Peavy to force the PC timeout (16:11).
  • Providence continued to chip away at the lead, but at every turn, the Hoyas had an answer. As PC cut it to 17, Fielder retorted with a trey on the other end.
  • Despite the Friars cutting it to as few as 13 (82-69), the Blue & Gray ran away with the 93-72 win.
