Georgetown Men’s Basketball Hosts No. 21/22 Marquette

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University men's basketball team will return to the nation's capital on Saturday, March 1 to face the No. 21/22 Marquette University Golden Eagles. Tipoff is slated for 8 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on Peacock with John Fanta calling the play-by-play and Tarik Turner providing analysis. Georgetown enters Wednesday's contest with a 16-12 record and a 7-10 mark in league action following a 93-79 defeat at UConn on Wednesday.

ABOUT THE HOYAS
  • On Wednesday night, Georgetown fell to the UConn Huskies 93-79 in a conference matchup at XL Center in Hartford. Micah Peavy led a quartet of Hoyas in double-figures with 25 points on an efficient 10-of-16 shooting, including a trio of 3-pointers, while chipping in three assists and grabbing a pair of rebounds. Jayden Epps (13), Jordan Burks (11) and Drew Fielder (11) rounded out those in double figures for GU. The Blue & Gray shot 51.8% (29-56) from the floor, including knocking down 11-of-27 (40.7%) from downtown.
  • It was announced early Tuesday that after suffering an injury to his left foot on Saturday, February 15, freshman Thomas Sorber had surgery on Wednesday, February 26 and a full recovery is  expected. Sorber will not play for the remainder of the 2024-25 season.
  • Peavy leads a quartet of Hoyas averaging double figures posting 16.5 ppg, a mark that is seventh in the BIG EAST. Sorber chips in 14.5 ppg, followed by Epps (12.7 ppg) and Malik Mack (12.5 ppg). Georgetown and Marquette are the only institutions with four players among the top 30 in scoring in the league.
  • Sorber leads the squad on the glass pulling down 8.5 rpg, which is tied for first in the league, followed by Peavy (5.6 rpg) and Drew Fielder (5.3 rpg).
  • Mack Paces the offense dishing out 4.6 apg, a mark that ranks seventh in the BE.
  • Peavy ranks eighth in the country and leads the BIG EAST in steals per game, picking 2.50 pockets per game.
  • Sorber's eight double-doubles are tied for the league lead and are tied for second in the nation among freshmen, behind Derik Queen (Maryland) who has 12.
  • Defensively, the team is fourth in the league in scoring defense, allowing an average of 67.8 ppg. GU ranks third in the BIG EAST in field goal percentage defense (41.4%). The Hoyas are third in the league in steals per game (8.3) and are forcing opponents to commit 13.86 turnovers per game, which ranks fourth in the conference.
  • For his efforts last week, Peavy was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Monday after averaging 25.0 ppg, 9.5 rpg, 5.5 apg and 5.0 spg in a 1-1 week for the Blue & Gray.
 
ABOUT THE No. 21/22 GOLDEN EAGLES
  • In its most recent outing, Marquette (21-7, 12-5 BE) defeated the Providence College Friars 82-52 on Tuesday, February 25 at Fiserv Forum. Kam Jones and Ben Gold led a trio of Golden Eagles in double figures, tallying 17 points apiece. Stevie Mitchell rounded out those in double figures for the Golden Eagles with 14.
  • Marquette shot 44.3% (27-61) from the field and tallied a season-best 17 made 3-pointers.
  • Jones leads a quartet of Golden Eagles averaging double figures posting 18.6 ppg, followed by David Joplin (13.3), Mitchell (11.0) and Chase Ross (10.7).
  • Joplin leads MU on the glass pulling down 5.2 rpg, followed by Jones (4.3 rpg).
  • Marquette is led by Head Coach Shaka Smart in his third season.
 
ABOUT THE SERIES WITH MARQUETTE
  • Saturday's matchup will be the second meeting this season and the 39th all-time meeting between the two sides dating back to the 1941-42 season. Marquette leads the all-time series 24-14.
  • In the matchup earlier this season, Mack led a quartet of Hoyas in double figures as he tallied 18 points on 7-for-17 shooting. Peavy (13), Sorber (11) and Curtis Williams Jr. (10) rounded out the Hoyas in double figures.
  • Head Coach Ed Cooley is 10-16 against Marquette in his career and is 4-5 all-time against Shaka Smart.
