Hoyas Fall 74-69 at Xavier in BIG EAST Battle

CINCINNATI – Despite Micah Peavy pouring in 27 points to match his career high, the Georgetown University men's basketball team fell to the Xavier University Musketeers 74-69 in a BIG EAST battle at Cintas Center on Tuesday evening. With the setback, the Hoyas fall to 14-9 on the year with a 5-7 mark in league action while the Musketeers improve to 14-9 overall and an even 6-6 mark in BIG EAST play.

ON THE RECORD
"I think it's our fifth road game that has come right down to the last two minutes, right? So there's growth there. We'll get there but we're not there yet. I think we have very good players. We have been making a lot of mistakes and those little things catch up to us. There's still a lot of basketball left to be played." - Head Coach Ed Cooley

HOYA HIGHLIGHTS
  • Peavy led all scorers with 27 points on 11-of-19 shooting, including a trio of 3-pointers. He added four rebounds and four assists to his stat line.
  • Thomas Sorber added an efficient 17 points on 8-for-12 shooting while dishing out a pair of assists and posting a pair of blocks.
  • Malik Mack rounded out the Hoyas in double figures with 13 points and chipped in a game-high eight helpers.
  • GU shot 49.1% (27-for-55) from the floor and was 30.4% (7-for-23) from behind the arc.
  • The Hoyas forced 16 Xavier turnovers on seven steals, converting those turnovers into 14 points.

XAVIER HIGHLIGHTS
  • Dailyn Swain led a quartet of Musketeers on offense with 18 points on 8-for-11 shooting from the floor. Marcus Foster and Zach Freemantle followed closely behind with 17 points apiece. Ryan Conwell rounded out the Musketeers in double figures with 11 points on the night.
  • Foster led Xavier on the glass pulling down a game-high 13 rebounds followed by Swain with six.
  • Xavier shot 51.0% (25-for-49) from the field and 38.9% (7-for-18) from behind the arc.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Despite Xavier getting on the board first, Sorber got the first three buckets to keep the Hoyas on pace with the home squad. A Peavy 3-pointer followed by another jumper from the GU frosh pushed the Blue & Gray ahead 11-7.
  • The Hoyas continued to limit XU's opportunities with stingy defense. On the offensive end, Peavy and Sorber continued to knock down shots for Georgetown with a turnaround jumper from Sorber extending the lead to eight (24-16) with 7:06 to play.
  • However, XU would not go away, finding an offensive spark before staging a 14-2 run to close the first half, going into the break up 30-26.
  • The Musketeers came out of the locker room red hot, extending the lead to nine (39-30) before a Sorber dunk stopped the run and GU called the timeout. Mack drained a 3-pointer and Peavy followed up with a bucket to make it a one-possession game (39-37) with 13:25 on the clock.
  • Every time GU would chip away, XU had a retort. A 3-pointer from Caleb Williams made it a one-point game (43-42) but continued trips to the line and the squad getting hot from downtown pushed the lead to eight (65-57) once again.
  • A Mack bucket followed by a Sorber dunk cut the deficit to four (65-61) but that's as close as the Hoyas would get, falling 74-69 on the road.
