WASHINGTON – The Georgetown women's lacrosse team (5-4) remains undefeated against Cincinnati after defeating the Bearcats (7-6) 16-11 on Cooper Field on Friday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Gracie Driggs got the scoring started with a goal at 13:45 mark to put the Hoyas up 1-0. The Bearcats responded a minute later with a goal from Paige Counts. GU went on a three-goal scoring run led by Driggs with two to earn a 4-1 lead. Cincinnati closed the gap to gain its first lead of the evening (5-4) after going on a four-goal run. Emma Gebhardt and Sophia Loschert each notched one goal to give GU a one-goal advantage (6-5) but Paige Selhorn tied the contest at the two-minute mark. In the final minute of the first quarter, Driggs capitalized on a player-up opportunity to give the Hoyas a one-goal lead (7-6) to start the second.
- Anne McGovern and Rileigh Meyer each notched a goal to keep the momentum going for GU in the second quarter. Selhorn scored her second goal of the afternoon to bring UC within two (9-7.) In the last six minutes of the quarter, the Hoyas and Bearcats exchanged goals giving GU a 10-8 lead at halftime.
- Georgetown came out strong in the third quarter with three-straight goals to lead 13-8. Camryn Callaghan responded for UC at the 3:49 mark with a free-position goal. At the 1:10 mark, Driggs notched her fifth goal of the afternoon to regain the Hoyas five-goal lead (14-9). The Bearcats were able to find the back of the net with three seconds remaining to end the third quarter down by four.
- After a scoreless opening 10 minutes of the fourth quarter, Selhorn found the back of the net for the Bearcats. Hanna Bishop scored two consecutive goals assisted by Annie McGovern to secure a 16-11 victory for the Hoyas.
OF NOTE
- McGovern led the offense with eight points (3G, 5A) while Driggs led with a career-high of six goals.
- McGovern went 3-3 in free-position attempts.
- Meyer and Bishop each notched two goals while Emma Gebhardt, Sophia Loschert and Rosie McCarthy each recorded one.
- At the circle, Driggs led with nine draw controls followed by Meyer and Lily Athanas with five each.
- GU outshot UC 33-26.
- The Hoyas commanded the circle going 20-9 in draw controls.
UP NEXT
The Hoyas will hit the road next Saturday, March 29 to begin conference play at Denver. Opening draw is scheduled for 1 p.m. EST at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium.
