WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University baseball team defeated the Butler Bulldogs 14-3 on Thursday evening. Owen Carapellotti tallied his 48th home run as a Hoya, tying the program record. With the win, GU improves to 13-24 overall and 2-5 in BIG EAST action while Butler slides to 12-25 overall and 1-6 in conference play.

ON THE RECORD
"What a great start to the weekend. I thought JT Raab gave us a great start, six innings and 11 strikeouts, only one walk, and Kai Leckszas behind him getting a three inning save was great. Our pitching was fantastic today and it was great to see. Defense played really well. I thought offensively, you know, we had to start with Owen Carapellotti going 4-for-5, with seven RBIs and obviously that's one aspect of it, but he did such a good job behind the plate. He threw the two runners out, which could have gotten Butler's momentum going, but he cut all that down. It was great to see Carapellotti tie the program record for home runs with his 48th as a Hoya today. He has been incredibly consistent the past four years, and I am really proud of him and all the work he has put in to reach this milestone. Really proud of the offense earning 10 walks and only three strikeouts, that was great to see. It was a great team win on day one and we look forward to coming back out tomorrow to compete." - Head Coach Edwin Thompson

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Carapellotti got the Hoya offense started in the bottom of the first frame with a single to the gap in left center, but the Hoyas were unable to bring him home.
  • In the bottom of the second inning, Schaaf hit a leadoff single and then proceeded to steal second, his 23rd stolen bag of the season. Jaden Sheffield drew a walk, but neither base runner was able to get back to home plate.
  • The Hoyas erupted for ten runs in the bottom of the third inning. Leading off, Caster notched his first hit of the game with a single up the middle. Jeremy Sheffield followed by drawing a walk. Carapellotti stepped in next and delivered his second hit of the day—an RBI single that brought Caster home. With the bases loaded and no outs, the Hoyas added their second run of the inning via another walk. Tristan Head then grounded out to first, but it was enough to plate Carapellotti from third for run number three. Gilio followed with a single to right, driving in Price to make it 4-0. Butler issued another walk with the bases full, pushing across the fifth run. Back at the top of the lineup, Caster hit a ball into the infield and reached safely on a fielding error, allowing Jaden Sheffield to score the sixth run. A third bases-loaded walk brought in another run, extending the lead to 7-0. The rally continued as Carapellotti came through again, ripping a bases-clearing double to stretch the lead to 10-0 before the inning finally came to a close.
  • Butler got on the board with a solo home run in the top of the fourth inning to make it 10-1. Raab proceeded to strike out the next six batters in order to end the top of the fifth frame.
  • The away team tallied two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning off of a two-run homer that made the score 10-3 in favor of the Hoyas.
  • Head doubled to left field in the bottom of the sixth inning. In the ensuing at bat, Jaden Shaffield hit a single to right center to move Head to third. While Jaden Sheffield got caught in a run down, Head was able to safely advance home to add a run for the Hoyas.
  • Carapelotti's batting prowess continued in the bottom of the seventh when he lifted a ball over the right field wall for a three-run homer.
  • Leckszas went on to close the door for Georgetown and seal the 14-3 victory.

OF NOTE
  • Raab's 11 punchouts are the most for a Hoya in a single game since April 19, 2023.
  • Carapellotti notched his eighth multi-hit game of the season.
  • Carapellotti launched his 48th career home run to tie the program home run record held by Jake Hyde.
  • The Georgetown pitching staff of Raab and Leckszas pitched a combined 13 strikeouts, marking a season high for the Hoyas.
