Tommy Hunter Celebrates Forty Seasons at the Helm of the Men’s Golf Program

WASHINGTON - Georgetown University is celebrating a remarkable milestone as Head Coach Tommy Hunter marks 40 years of dedicated service to the men's golf program, a tenure defined by championship titles, player development, and an unwavering commitment to the Hoya legacy.

Under Hunter's leadership, the Hoyas have captured four BIG EAST Championships, earned five trips to the NCAA Regionals, and produced 21 NCAA Division I All-America Scholars, reflecting both competitive excellence and academic achievement throughout his illustrious career.

Hunter's personal accolades include four times named BIG EAST Coach of the Year - 1995, 2004, 2010 and 2016. Coach of the Year honors in District II of Division I Men's Golf in 1997. Georgetown University's Coach of the Year in 2005 & 2016 and the Vicennial Medal at Georgetown University in 1999 distinguishing 20+ years of service.

"The Hilltop is my home. Our "Center G" is plated on my heart. To be honest, the past 40 years have moved so quickly simply because they have been the joy of my life. I am so grateful to so many layers of our program -  Lee (Lee Reed, Francis X. Rienzo, Director of Athletics) and Dan ( Dan O'Neil Deputy Assistant Athletic Director - External Affairs) for entrusting me with the responsibility to guide our young men through four very pivotal years of their lives….our generous alumni and their financial support…our parents, who are with us on the road, and provide a strong brace which we lean on…and of course, all the players who have walked every fairway and played their hearts out for our great university.

Georgetown University and Georgetown Athletics are pillars of success, class, and most of all, 'doing it the right way'. My only hope is that I have served both in a manner they deserve." - Head Coach Tommy Hunter.

Over the course of his remarkable 40-year tenure, Hunter has guided the Hoyas to five NCAA postseason appearances. Georgetown made its NCAA debut in 1997 at the East Regional hosted at The Homestead Resort's renowned Upper Cascades Course. The team returned to NCAA competition in 2004 at the Yale Golf Course, followed by a 2010 appearance in the Southwest Central Regional at The Traditions Course at Texas A&M. In 2016, the Hoyas competed in the Southeast Regional at Vanderbilt Legends Club in Franklin, Tennessee, and most recently, took on the NCAA Southeast Regional in 2018 at Reunion Resort's Watson Course in Orlando, Florida.

Hunter's legacy also includes four BIG EAST Conference Championship titles: 1998 (TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm, Potomac, Maryland), 2010 (Copperhead Course at Innisbrook Resort, Tampa, Florida.), and back-to-back wins in 2016 and 2018 (Callawassie Island Golf Club, Okatie, South Carolina). Since 1990, the Hoyas have placed in the top five of the BIG EAST Championship 19 times — finishing as champions four times, runners-up five times, third on six occasions, fourth three times, and once in fifth. In regular season play, Georgetown has earned 22 first-place finishes in NCAA Division I tournaments under Hunter's leadership, most recently this past fall 2024 season at the ODU/OBX Intercollegiate in Okatie, North Carolina on October 22, 2024.
