Hoyas Fall at Mount St. Mary’s

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University baseball team dropped Wednesday's contest at Mount St. Mary's 25-16. With the setback, GU slides to 14-31 overall while the Mountaineers improve to 17-26.

ON THE RECORD
"Tough day at the ballpark for us. We didn't get enough stops during the game, but I was really proud of our offense and how we came out from pitch one again and scored early. Kavi Caster back-to-back days of leadoff home runs was awesome and Connor Price having another one today was great. Jeremy Sheffeild had a big one and Keith Savoy Jr. tallying his first collegiate home run was awesome to see. Unfortunately, we didn't get enough stops at the end of the day. Give Mount St. Mary's credit we gave them too many free bases and they took advantage of it. We will regroup and get ready for St. John's this weekend." - Head Coach Edwin Thompson

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Caster, coming off a two-homer performance against Maryland, wasted no time getting things started in the ballgame, launching a leadoff home run on the very first pitch of the game, his second-straight game with a homer on the first pitch. In the next at bat, Jeremy Sheffield followed suit, crushing a solo shot of his own to make it back-to-back home runs and give the Hoyas an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Schaaf kept things alive in the top of the first with a single up the left side, followed by a walk for Larkins. Jaden Sheffield came close to adding another homer, sending a shot to deep left that fell just short of the wall for the final out of the top of the first inning.
  • The Mountaineers loaded the bases in the bottom of the first with two outs and seized the lead when Ty Fredo launched a grand slam, putting Mount St. Mary's on top, 4-2. GU was able to put a halt to the scoring run with his second strikeout of the ballgame to end the first inning.
  • Carapellotti led off the top of the third with a double to center field, setting the stage for Georgetown to even the score. In the very next at-bat, Connor Price launched his second home in as many days with a two-run blast that tied the game at 4-4. Mount St. Mary's reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the third with an RBI single, the Mountaineers then extended their advantage with a three-run homer to push the margin to four.
  • GU responded to start the fourth with a solo shot from Savoy Jr. In the ensuing at bat, Caster laced a double to right field leaving the graduate student just a triple shy of a cycle through four innings. A single from Carapellotti brought Caster home, cutting the Hoya deficit to two. With one out, Schaaf hit an RBI single to left bringing home another run for the Hoyas. Larkins stepped up to the dish and hit a single through the right side loading the bases for GU. Jaden Sheffield then wore a fastball bringing home a runner for GU tying the game at 8-8. In the ensuing at bat, Depman hit an RBI single to left field scoring another before Savoy Jr. was hit by a pitch which brought home another Hoya runner. The Mountaineers responded with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the frame cutting the Hoya lead to one.
  • In the fifth, Mount St. Mary's scratched across six runs before adding another in the sixth giving the Mountaineers a 17-11 advantage heading into the final three frames.
  • GU was able to add one in the seventh, but Mount St. Mary's responded with two of their own taking the 19-12 advantage into the eighth.
  • The Blue & Gray was able to add two in the second to last frame with the help of an RBI double from Caster. The Mountaineers tacked on six in the eighth ballooning the advantage to 11.
  • GU was unable to mount a comeback, dropping the contest 25-16.

OF NOTE
  • Caster has now launched home runs on the first pitch he's seen in back-to-back games, the first coming against Maryland on Tuesday, April 29, at Capital One Park.
  • Price crushed his second home run of the week, marking just the second time in his career he's gone deep in back-to-back games. The last time he accomplished the feat was against Delaware State on April 27 and April 29, 2023 while playing for LIU.
  • Savoy Jr. notched his first collegiate home run.
