Hoyas Win Double Overtime Thriller at Marquette

WASHINGTON – Georgetown University's men's lacrosse team remained unbeaten in BIG EAST play with a 10-9 double overtime victory at Marquette on Saturday afternoon in Milwaukee. The No. 14 Hoyas improve to 7-3 overall and share the league lead at 2-0 while the Golden Eagles fall to 6-4 on the year and even their record to 1-1 in conference action.

Hoya Highlights
  • Aidan Carroll led Georgetown with five goals and an assist, scoring the game-winner with 24 seconds remaining in the second overtime.
  • Jack Ransom notched the second hat trick of his career, Patrick Crogan added a goal and an assist and Jordan Wray found the back of the net as well.
  • Fulton Bayman dished out four assists while Cade Caggiano had another.
  • Defensively, Ty Banks notched a pair of caused turnovers while four other Hoyas had one.
  • Back in action after missing the last four games, Ross Prince won 16-of-23 (.695) faceoffs and hauled in a career-high seven ground balls.
  • George Acton, Robert Plath and Joe Vranizan each had four ground balls as well.
  • In goal, Anderson Moore (7-3) collected 11 saves in the win.
How it Happened
  • Marquette got on the board first, scoring 20 seconds into the game before back-to-back goals from Carroll gave the Hoyas a 2-1 lead with 7:23 to play in the first. The Golden Eagles then closed out the opening frame on a 3-0 run to lead 4-2 after 15 minutes of action.
  • A slower placed second quarter saw limited scoring as both teams only found the back of the cage once. Wray netted his lone goal of the game at the 13:50 mark to pull within one at 4-3, but Marquette scored with just 1:20 to play to take a 5-3 lead into halftime.
  • Coming out of the break, both squads traded early goals to give MU a 6-4 advantage before the Hoyas scored four-straight, including three goals in 52 seconds, to lead 8-6 with 3:54 to play in the third. Marquette answered right back, scoring 21 seconds later to salvage an 8-7 score heading into the final frame.
  • In the fourth, a Carroll goal in the opening minute gave GU another two-goal lead but the Golden Eagles scored twice to knot things up at 9-9 at the 8:25 mark, a score that would last until the final horn in regulation.
  • After a scoreless first overtime, both Georgetown and Marquette had their opportunities in the second extra frame. With possession in the final minute, Carroll beat his defender with a spin move to the outside and fired home the game-winner far post to keep the Hoyas undefeated in BIG EAST play.
Marquette Notes
  • Matt Caputo and Bobby O'Grady led the Golden Eagles with three goals each.
  • Defensively, Carsen Brandt and Brad Johnson were both credited with two caused turnovers.
  • In goal, Lucas Lawas (6-4) had 17 saves in the loss.
Georgetown Notes
  • With his six points, Carroll moves into 25th place all time on the Georgetown career scoring list with 119 points. He passes Mark Murphy '90 on the list and is one point behind Craig Berge '18 and Peter Conley '17 for 23rd place.
  • The double overtime win is the first for the Hoyas since a 10-9 win against St. Mary's (Md.) in 1987.
  • Georgetown has not lost an overtime game since falling 10-9 at Johns Hopkins in the 2018 NCAA First Round.
  • The win is the fourth-straight for the Blue & Gray playing on natural grass. The Hoyas have not lost on grass since the 2016 season.
