Hoyas Come Up Short in Series Final at Villanova 5-2

VILLANOVA, Pa. – The Georgetown University baseball team dropped the final matchup of the series to the Villanova Wildcats, 5-2 on Sunday afternoon to go 1-2 on the weekend. With the loss, Georgetown slides to 11-20, 1-2 BE on the season while Villanova improves to 17-13, 2-1 BE.

ON THE RECORD
"I thought Villanova did a great job all weekend. They played very good baseball. They played clean baseball, and they were the more competitive team today. I thought our guys did a good job of getting their starter out early, but unfortunately, we just couldn't capitalize on it throughout the game. We had too many quick outs and quick innings, and we just could never get a rhythm offensively. We only get three hits and that's not enough to beat anybody. They're a really good team, so tip our caps to them. We'll just have to keep working." - Head Coach Edwin Thompson

HOYA HIGHLIGHTS

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • In the top of the second inning, Price ripped a single into left field to pick up the team's first hit of the afternoon. The Hoyas were unable to bring any baserunners home before the third out of the inning.
  • Both squads were scoreless through three innings. In the top of the fourth, Price blasted his second hit of the game, an RBI double, driving in Head to give the Hoyas a 1-0 lead. Price and Caster executed a double steal, putting two runners in scoring position with no outs. In the next at bat, Sheffield hit an RBI sac fly to center field, allowing Head to score and add another run to make it 2-0 before the top of the inning ended.
  • The Wildcats answered in the bottom of the fourth with a solo home run and a single RBI, knotting the affair at 2-2.
  • The bottom of the fifth inning saw Villanova take its first lead of the day with another home run, making the score 3-2 in favor of the Wildcats. Villanova extended its lead by one in the bottom of the sixth frame with an RBI groundout with the bases loaded. O'Connor came in as relief for the Hoyas and struck out the final batter of the inning with runners on first and second, minimizing the damage.
  • Villanova scratched an additional run in the bottom of the seventh and would go on to take the 5-2 victory and win the weekend series.

OF NOTE

  • Price recorded his third multi-hit outing of the season.
