Hoyas Defeat Marquette 19-8 to Advance to BIG EAST Championship Game

DENVER – Georgetown University's top-seeded men's lacrosse team defeated fourth seed Marquette 19-8 on Thursday to advance to the title game of the BIG EAST Championship, presented by JEEP. The Hoyas will face the winner of the second semifinal between Villanova and Providence with an eye on their seventh-straight league crown.
 
Hoya Highlights
  • Fulton Bayman led Georgetown (10-4) with three goals and five assists. His five assists are second most for a Georgetown player in a BIG EAST Tournament game while his eight points are fourth-best.
  • Ten other Hoyas scored goals as well, including a career-high four from Lucas Dudemaine.
  • Joe Cesare tallied two goals and two assists while both Kevin Miller and Jordan Wray posted two goals as well.
  • Aidan Carroll had a goal and two assists while Ty Banks, Henry Caponiti, Ben Firlie, Wilson Van Buren and Joe Vranizan each had lone goals. Jack Ransom was credited with an assist as well.
  • The Hoyas went 18-for-31 at faceoffs (.580) on the day as Van Buren went 9-for-18, Ross Prince was 5-for-7 and Matthew Riley went 4-for-6. The trio also combined for nine ground balls.
  • Defensively, Charlie McGurrin had two caused turnovers and four ground balls. Seven other Hoyas had lone caused turnovers as well.
  • In goal, Anderson Moore (10-4) collected seven saves in the win while allowing just six goals.
How it Happened
  • Georgetown got on the board first before Marquette responded with a pair to lead 2-1 at the 8:15 mark, their first and only lead of the game. The Hoyas then closed out the opening frame with back-to-back goals to take a 3-2 lead they would never relinquish.
  • The second quarter was all Georgetown as the Blue & Gray held their guests scoreless for more than 13 minutes while adding another three goals. Marquette's late goal with 1:57 remaining in the half made it a 6-3 Hoya lead going into halftime.
  • Coming out the break, Georgetown blew the game open and outscored MU 7-2 in the frame to lead 13-5.
  • A 6-3 fourth quarter sealed the 19-8 win for the Blue & Gray.
Marquette Notes
  • Bobby O'Grady led the Golden Eagles (7-7) with two goals.
  • David Lamarca had two caused turnovers and a ground ball.
  • In goal, Lucas Lawas had five saves in the loss.
Georgetown Notes
  • The Hoyas advance to play for their seventh-straight BIG EAST Tournament title, a league and NCAA Division I record.
  • With his three points, Carroll moves into a tie for 18th place all time on the Georgetown career scoring list with 133 points. He is tied with Reilly O'Connor (B'15) and Declan McDermott (B'22, MiM '23) on the list.
  • With their 10th win of the season, the Hoyas have won 10 or more games in seven-straight full campaigns, the third longest streak in Division I behind only Maryland (22) and Duke (18).
