No. 25/14 Hoyas Open the Season at High Point on Thursday

WASHINGTON - The No. 25/14 Georgetown University men's soccer team will open up the 2025 season on Thursday as the squad travels to High Point University to take on the Panthers in a nonconference matchup at Vert Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+ with Jamie Patel on the call.

  • Georgetown will head home on Monday as the squad hosts local-rival Maryland in a derby under the lights at Shaw Field.
About the Hoyas
  • Georgetown went 11-5-5 in 2024 with a mark of 5-2-1 in BIG EAST Conference play which was good enough to win the BIG EAST Championship. The Hoyas boasted four All-East Region and seven All-BIG EAST selections, including one major award winner.
  • The Blue & Gray advanced to the NCAA second round a season ago after earning a top-four seed in the tournament.
  • Two Hoyas were selected in the 2025 Major League Soccer (MLS) SuperDraft presented by adidas. Eric Howard was the fifth pick of the second round selected 35th overall by the New England Revolution. Additionally, classmate Van Horn was the 75th overall pick by the Colorado Rapids going 15th in the third round.
  • Beginning the year prior, the SuperDraft was expanded to include college players who are collegiate sophomores and above, Generation adidas players, any former college player who departed college with remaining eligibility since the conclusion of the college season approximately one year prior to the SuperDraft, and other players specifically made available by the League. Drafted players with collegiate eligibility remaining could have opted to return to school in the fall. Any drafted player who did return or turned professional will not be draft-eligible in the future.
  • Georgetown was picked first in the BIG EAST Conference East Division Preseason Coaches Poll as the Hoyas were awarded 65 points and 10 first place votes.
  • Four players earned preseason honors as senior Zach Zengue, junior Matthew Van Horn and sophomores Mitchell Baker and Tate Lampman were all selected to the preseason All-BIG EAST squad.
  • The Hoyas are currently ranked No. 25 in the United Soccer Coaches Preseason Poll and No. 14 in the TopDrawerSoccer Preseason Poll.
  • Lampman and Zengue were both named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com Preseason Best XI Team today.
  • Diego Letayf was selected as a third-year captain, classmate Julian Barrios Cristales joined him being selected by the coaching staff and their teammates to lead the 2025 squad as captains.
  • This season, Georgetown will face six teams that appeared in the 2024 NCAA Championship including four that finished the season ranked among the top 25 as well as Vermont, the reigning national champion.
About the Panthers
  • High Point was 11-4-2 and 6-1 in league play a season ago.
  • HPU had three players recognized as Big South Conference Preseason Players of the Year, while the Panthers were selected as the team league favorite. Brendan Krueger, Jefferson Amaya and Josh Caron were all tabbed to the Big South "Top Returners to Watch" list and were voted by league head coaches as the conference's best overall players.
  • High Point is currently ranked No. 24 in the TopDrawerSoccer.com Preseason Poll.

  • Georgetown is 1-0-1 all-time against the Panthers, the squads have never met in High Point.
  • The last meeting was a 1-1 draw at Shaw Field during the 2022 campaign.
