WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University volleyball team fell in straight sets to the University of Virginia, 3-0 (25-17, 29-27, 25-17), on Friday night at McDonough Arena in Washington, D.C. With the loss, GU slides to 0-1 on the season and the Cavaliers start the season at 1-0.
Head Coach AJ Bonetti
"Good opening match. Obviously not the result we wanted, but we will look back and see what we can look to correct before we face American tomorrow. Quick turnaround for us, but excited about some of the young girls getting out there and getting a chance to put on a bit of a show. We're excited about what they did. I'm pretty proud of the second set, it's something we can build off of. Overall, just a lot of good effort there defensively. Nine blocks against a strong ACC finishing team last year is nothing to joke about. So you know, I'm definitely looking forward to the rest of this weekend."
Samantha Soderlund
"I think this was a really good start for us, although the outcome wasn't how we expected and how we wanted it to be. I think that we all have something to be proud of. Coming in as a freshman, I was definitely nervous, but I know I looked around and had all the girls next to me and this team, which already feels like family to me, and I think they've really encouraged me. Of course, coach Bonetti and all of the coaches are super helpful every time that I wasn't feeling the best or when I made a mistake, I would always look to them. So overall, I think I was definitely nervous, but I just shook all the nerves off and played the game that I know how to play."
