Hoyas Sweep Huskies for First BIG EAST Victory

WASHINGTON – Georgetown volleyball secured its first BIG EAST victory of the season on Friday night, sweeping UConn 3-0 (25-20, 25-19, 25-23) at McDonough Arena. With the victory, the Hoyas improve to 9-5 overall and 1-2 in the BIG EAST, while the Huskies drop to 7-9 and 0-3 in the conference.

The Hoyas built a 15-9 lead midway through the opener behind three kills apiece from Dionna Mitchell and Katherine McGregor. UConn surged back late, cutting a nine-point deficit to four, but Georgetown held on for the 25-20 victory. Mitchell finished the set with six kills while hitting .333 to help the Hoyas post a .324 team hitting percentage.
 
After trading points early in the second set, Georgetown grabbed a 12-9 lead on kills from Mitchell and Bella McGirr. The Huskies responded with a 5-2 run to tie the set at 14. A kill from Grace Albaugh ignited a 6-2 Hoya run that forced a UConn timeout at 20-16, and Georgetown eventually secured the set 25-19 on a solo block from Kamryn Lee-Caracci.
 
UConn jumped out to a 5-3 lead in the third frame, but Lee-Caracci sparked a 7-2 response with two blocks, a kill, and an ace to give the Hoyas a 10-7 advantage. The Huskies later rallied to take an 18-16 lead, but Georgetown answered out of a timeout to close out the 25-23 set victory and seal the 3-0 sweep.
 
Hoya Highlights
 
  • Mitchell led the attack with 11 kills, while Berkeley Ploder floored eight and Lee-Caracci added seven on a team-best .400 hitting percentage.
  • Juleigh Urbina directed the offense with a team-high 19 assists, while Natalie Nguyen added 15.
  • McGirr and Mitchell anchored the back row with nine digs apiece to lead the Hoyas.
  • Ploder controlled the net defense with five total blocks, while Lee-Caracci recorded four.
  • Georgetown held team advantages in kills (39-28), assists (38-27), digs (37-32) and blocks (9-8) while hitting .278 and holding the Huskies to a .052 clip.
