Hoyas Down Wake Forest in First Exhibition Matchup

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. –  A quintet of Hoyas scored in double figures as the Georgetown University men's basketball defeated the Wake Forest Demon Deacons 94-77 on Sunday afternoon at LJVM Coliseum. The preseason exhibition was the first in a pair of preseason matchups the Hoyas have on the schedule before opening the season on Monday, November 2 when Georgetown hosts Loyola Maryland at Capital One Arena.

ON THE RECORD

"Very proud of our effort. I thought we played hard. I thought Wake Forest played hard. Both coaches try to play multiple guys to look at multiple lineups. I thought our guys were locked in defensively, but we still got a long way to go. But I'm impressed with what we're able to do, to, you know, to finish the mission." - Head Coach Ed Cooley

HOYA HIGHLIGHTS

  • Vyctorius Miller led five Hoyas in double figures with 16 points on 75.0% (6-8) shooting, including a 5-for-6 performance from beyond the arc.
  • Kayvaun Mulready and Chol Machot scored 15 points on 5-for-9 and 4-for-6 shooting, respectively. Machot also led the squad with a game-best eight rebounds.
  • Elmarko Jackson added 11 points on 4-for-7 shooting and a perfect 2-for-2 performance from the charity stripe.
  • Caleb Williams rounded out the Hoyas in double figures with 10 points, shooting 4-for-6 from the field.
  • Jaland Lowe paced the Hoya offense with 10 assists, followed by Jackson and Gabriel Landeira with three each.
  • For the game, Georgetown shot 60.0% (33-55) from the floor and 55.2% (16-29) from deep.
  • The Blue & Gray outrebounded Wake Forest 38-25.

DEMON DEACON HIGHLIGHTS

  • Kevair Kennedy led the Demon Deacons in scoring with 19 points on 7-for-12 shooting, while Gavin Placide added 14 points and Gallagher Placide recorded 13 to round out the double-figure scorers.
  • Gallagher Placide pulled down a team-high six rebounds.
  • Jamari McDowell and Austin Abson dished out four assists apiece.
  • Wake Forest shot 45.0% (27-60) from the field and 24.1% (7-29) from three-point range.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The first half went back and forth with the score knotted four times in the opening seven minutes. Wake Forest pulled ahead 14-12 on a layup before a Miller trey pushed the lead back to the Hoyas. It was the first of four-straight triples for Miller that would push the Blue & Gray up 25-18 with an elusive four-point play to cap the Miller run.
  • The Hoyas continued to pile on points, with a Lowe jumper and a Williams triple pushing the lead to double digits (29-18).
  • Miller's treys sparked a Hoya barrage from beyond the arc as Mulready got hot from deep, sinking a trio of three-pointers to push the lead to 44-31. A Deacon bucket cut it back to 11 before Williams knocked down the 10th GU triple of the half to send the squads into the locker room with the Hoyas up 47-33.
  • A quick seven points from the home team cut GU's lead to seven and got the crowd backing the Demon Deacons. A Mulready 3-pointer sandwiched between a Josiah Parker bucket and a Seal Diouf dunk pushed the lead back to 14 and the Hoyas never looked back.
  • Ballooning the advantage to as many as 25 (91-66) on a Parker stepback trey, the Hoyas would seal the 94-77 victory at the final whistle.
