WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University men's basketball team took care of business with a commanding 80-58 win over the visiting Loyola University Maryland Greyhounds on opening night of the 2026-27 college basketball season at Capital One Arena. With the win in the District, Georgetown improves to 1-0 on the season while the Greyhounds drop to 0-1.
ON THE RECORD
"Obviously, very happy with the win. We got some nervous butterflies out. I thought we came out and set the tone in the first 20 minutes. I thought in the second half we got a little stagnant. We didn't make as many open shots in the second half as we did in the first half, and I think we got a little antsy. Credit to Loyola, they did respond and they made eight of 14 in the second half, and that's why the game stayed the way it did … First game jitters out the way. It's good to be back here at Capital One Arena. Looking forward to playing our next opponent, which will be a really, really hard opponent. So I'm looking forward to that, but very excited about the win. A lot to learn from them. I thought we made a lot of mistakes, but we'll learn from them and hopefully improve for our game on Saturday." - Head Coach
Ed Cooley
"I felt like the game slowed down a lot for me, but I think my teammates just also made it easy for me. We drill day in and day out what happens when teams go through different coverages, and I was fortunate enough to watch Loyola Maryland on the bench last year in our first game at Kentucky. So just some familiarity, watching a good amount of film, but I think our guys, they trusted me and we had a good flow of what was going on." -

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Georgetown jumped out to a quick lead with Lowe pouring in 11 points on a trio of treys and a bucket before the first media timeout as Georgetown held a 14-2 lead early.
- Back-to-back Greyhound buckets cut it to single digits (14-6) but the Hoyas staged an 11-4 run capped by a Caleb Williams dunk to extend the lead back to double figures (25-10) and never look back.
- The Blue & Gray continued to extend the gap with 14 unanswered sparked by an Iwuchukwu dunk and including triples from Lowe and freshman Pedro Pastre. The run would give GU a 24-point lead (39-15).
- Another Lowe trey would give the Blue & Gray the 44-20 advantage at the break.
- Out of the locker room, Loyola Maryland was the team that was hot, cutting the deficit to just 11 on a 14-0 run. A Lowe bucket ended the drought as the teams traded points behind the play of Lowe for the Hoyas and Leo Ricketts for the Greyhounds.
- A Jackson layup sparked 16 unanswered fueled by 10 from Iwuchukwu alone as the Hoyas took the 72-45 lead.
