Hoyas Fall in Season Opener at Winthrop

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University baseball team fell to the Winthrop University Eagles on opening day of the 2026 season on Friday afternoon, 13-2. With the loss, GU slips to 0-1 on the season while the Eagles improve to 1-0.

ON THE RECORD

"You know, today we did not play to the level that we're capable of. We didn't play clean defensively. A lot of credit to them. They're a veteran team that won 30 plus games last year with a lot of good players back on the roster. And, you know, we have to do things better. I am really proud of freshman Max Whitmer being ready to get out there and contribute in some big spots. It was also good to see Braxton Templin get his first career hit, a big home run there late in the game. But overall, we'll regroup and we'll be better tomorrow." - Head Coach Edwin Thompson

HOYA HIGHLIGHTS

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Georgetown got on the board first in the top of the opening inning when Solomon reached second base on a fielding error. Connor Peek moved him over to third with a groundout to first and Larkins followed by knocking an RBI single into left field to send Solomon home to score the first run of the 2026 season and give GU the early advantage.
  • A pitching battle would ensue, with neither team able to push a run across until the bottom of the third inning when the Eagles loaded the bases and scored two runs to take the 2-1 lead.
  • The top of the fourth frame would feature two Hoyas in scoring position, but WU was able to get out of the jam.
  • The Hoyas applied pressure in the top of the fifth as Solomon and Peek each notched their first hits as Hoyas to put two aboard. Price was then hit by a pitch, loading the bases with two outs. Ashton Seymore would be unable to bring any runners home.
  • An RBI double in the bottom of the fifth inning would give Winthrop another run in the contest before a pair of wild pitches would score a pair for the home team. The Hoyas would head into the sixth frame trailing 5-1.
  • Winthrop would add four runs to the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth inning on three RBI singles and a walk- in run to take a 9-1 lead.
  • In the top of the seventh inning, Templin, pinch hitting, crushed the first pitch he saw over the right-field wall, adding the second run of the game for the Hoyas.
  • The Eagles would rattle off four more unanswered runs on their way to a 13-2 win.

OF NOTE `

  • Whitmer recorded his first strikeout of his collegiate career.
  • Templin notched his first collegiate home run of his career.
