Hoyas Split Doubleheader at Winthrop

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University baseball team split its doubleheader against Winthrop University on Saturday afternoon at Founders Field. The Hoyas dropped the first contest 13–3 but responded to claim an 8-3 victory in game two. With the split, Georgetown moves to 1–2 after opening weekend, while the Eagles sit at 2–1.

ON THE RECORD

"That's a really good team that we played this weekend. They're going to win a lot of games. They're tough. I'm just truly proud of the team and how we came out today. In game three we scored in the first inning, and I thought that was outstanding to score right off the jump and score those two runs to give us some confidence, to give us a little bit of life. And then Spencer Seid for five innings was phenomenal. Five innings, no hits and six strikeouts, I thought he was his table setter. But when they came back and punched us and we scored three, you know, we didn't waver. We won the back half. We scored three in the eighth with the two out hit by Jeremy Sheffield, and then we had the big home run with Connor Price to kind of seal the deal. I also thought Andrew Moy making his first appearance and Ethan Rucker getting out of the sixth was huge. And then obviously Luke Jackman came in and showed why we feel very good about him in the back part of the game. So all in all, I'm really just proud of the team and our fight and our competitiveness." - Head Coach Edwin Thompson

HOYA HIGHLIGHTS GAME ONE

HOW IT HAPPENED GAME ONE

  • Winthrop got off to an early lead in the bottom of the first inning when a wild pitch scored the first run of the day for the home team. The Eagles would scratch another run across home plate off of a sacrifice fly to right field that gave Winthrop the 2-0 lead.
  • In the top of the second inning, a pair of singles from Sheffield and Blair put runners on the base path, but the Hoyas would be unable to capitalize and chip away at the WU lead.
  • The Eagles would find another scoring opportunity in the bottom of the second inning off an RBI single into center field that provided the third run of the contest.
  • In the top of the third frame, Larkins ripped a single into shallow left field that advanced Peek to second just before a wild pitch got them both into scoring position with two outs and Travis Ilitch up at the plate. Ilitch proceeded to lace one to left center, reaching second base on an error and sending Larkins and Peek home to cut the Winthrop lead to just one.
  • The home team would retaliate quickly with another run scored, this time off of an RBI double to left field that brought in the fourth score of the game. While GU remained scoreless in the fourth frame, Winthrop would take advantage of the loaded bases and tack on five more runs making it 9-2 headed into the fifth inning.
  • The Eagles would go on to score another run in the bottom of the fifth frame to make it 10-2.
  • The Hoyas showed signs of life in the top of the seventh inning when Solomon ripped a double and Peek worked a walk. With runners on first and second, Larkins drove a ball into right field, bringing Solomon across the plate and placing Peek on third. The ensuing at bat was unable to capitalize on the advantage and the score would be cut to 10-3 in favor of the home team.
  • In the bottom of the seventh inning, Winthrop would tally three runs and that would be enough to take the 13-3 win.

HOYA HIGHLIGHTS GAME TWO

  • Luke Jackman tossed the final 2.0 innings punching out two while allowing no runs and no hits.

  • Peek went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, a pair of RBIs, a double and a walk.

  • Ashtin Gilio and Ashton Seymore each had a walk.
  • Connor Price went 1-for-4 with a home run, an RBI and a run scored.
  • Ilitch was 3-for-5 with a double and a run scored.
  • Blair went 2-for-5 and scored a run.

HOW IT HAPPENED GAME TWO

  • Georgetown got off to a hot start in game three of the series. The top of the first frame saw Peek score on a wild pitch and Jeremy Sheffield knock an RBI single to get Larkins home from second to take an early 2-0 lead. GU would add another run as Sheffield hit his second RBI single of the night to send Peek to home plate to take a three-score advantage.
  • The hitting for the Hoyas continued as Ilitch and Blair recorded back-to-back singles with one out in the top of the fourth frame. In the following at bat, Solomon drew a walk to load up the bases. Peek would be able to send a sacrifice fly out to right field to score Ilitch before GU would be down on outs. The Hoyas led 4-0 headed into the bottom of the fourth inning.
  • The Eagles would not go down without a fight as they would tally a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning and an RBI single to cut the Hoya lead to one.
  • The Hoyas would pull away late, plating four runs across the eighth and ninth innings behind RBI singles from Peek and Sheffield, capped by Price's solo home run to secure an 8–3 victory.
