Hoyas Drop Contest at Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Georgetown University baseball team fell to the University of Maryland Terrapins on Tuesday night 16-3 at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium. With the loss, the Hoyas slip to 1-3 on the season while the Terrapins improve to 3-1.

ON THE RECORD

"I thought the first four innings were great. Charlie Hendrix, his first time out, and as a freshman, came out and gave us an unbelievable start to the game. Unfortunately, you know, you can't give a good team free bases. And we gave them too many free bases and they cashed in. You know, ultimately we got to play, you know, better baseball. But happy to see Jack Mullen get out there for the first time in two years, been injured and then Drew Rybinski get his first career hit here in his home state. But you know, bottom line, we didn't do enough to be where we wanted to be in this game, and ultimately, we have to get better before we get to our home opener this weekend." - Head Coach Edwin Thompson

HOYA HIGHLIGHTS

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The home team got on the board first with an RBI double to left center, taking an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. The Hoyas responded in the top of the second frame when Sheffield knocked the first single of the afternoon. Georgetown would score its first run of the outing on a sacrifice fly from Price to send Sheffield home and knot the contest. In the ensuing at bat, Seymour blasted his first homer of the season over the center field wall to take back the lead.
  • The Terrapins would manage to grab another run in the bottom of the fourth inning on a fielder's choice to tie the game up. Maryland proceeded to break it open in the bottom of the fifth inning, scratching nine runs across home plate to extend its lead to 11-2.
  • Following a scoreless sixth frame, Maryland would put up another three runs to make it 14-2. The Hoyas were able to load up the bases in the top of the eighth inning off of a pair of hit by pitches and a single from Templin, but the Hoyas would be unable to capitalize.
  • The Terrapins would rattle off another pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth frame. Georgetown was able to score one more run in the contest when Caferillo had an RBI to send Gilio home from third, but it would not be enough as Maryland would go on to take the 16-3 win.

OF NOTE

  • Seymore recorded his first home run of the season, his fourth as a Hoya.
  • Rybinski tallied his first collegiate hit, a double.
