WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University baseball team fell to the UMBC Retrievers 12-7 on Wednesday night at Capital One Park. With the loss in Tysons, Virginia, the Hoyas fall to 5-4 on the season while the Retrievers improve to 1-3.
ON THE RECORD
"Tough night on our end, UMBC came out and just played better baseball against us. Tribute to them, how they came out and swung the bats and we didn't defend the way we are capable of defending, and an alternate cost us throughout the game. And then offensively, their pitchers did a really good job keeping us off balance for the first four or five innings. And then we got that one hit there, but by Sheffield to get us on the board. But I like our fight late. I appreciate our guys' effort in the eighth for us to come back and score. We didn't quit. Obviously, that's not what we do, but to ultimately play better. And these games are very hard, and we have to compete at the level we're capable of." - Head Coach

HOYA HIGHLIGHTS
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The visiting Retrievers struck first in the opening frame, using a lead-off walk and a single to set up a two-out rally. A Georgetown throwing error allowed two unearned runs to cross the plate, giving UMBC an early 2-0 lead. The Retrievers added another unearned run in the second following a bases-loaded walk and an infield error.
- Georgetown began to chip away in the bottom of the fourth inning when Peek drew a walk and Sheffield laced an RBI double to left field. The Hoyas continued the comeback effort in the seventh; after Hamilton walked and was moved over by a Solomon sacrifice bunt, Gilio ripped an RBI triple to right field. Peek followed with a groundout to second to score Gilio, cutting the UMBC lead to 5-3.
- The momentum shifted in the top of the eighth when the Retrievers exploded for seven runs. A combination of four walks, a hit-by-pitch, and two Hoya errors allowed UMBC to break the game open, punctuated by a two-RBI double from Melton and a two-RBI single from Orr.
- Refusing to quit, the Hoyas loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth. Solomon delivered a bases-clearing double to center field, plating three runs, and Gilio followed with an RBI single to bring the score to 12-7. However, the rally stalled there as UMBC's bullpen induced a double play to end the threat and eventually closed out the 12-7 victory.
OF NOTE
- Sheffield extended his hitting streak to nine games with his fourth-inning double.
- Solomon's three RBIs ties a season-high for the infielder.
