Georgetown Women’s Lacrosse Falls to Penn

WASHINGTON – The No. 22 Georgetown women's lacrosse team (5-3) fell in a hard-fought 11-10 contest to the University of Pennsylvania Quakers (3-4) on Sunday afternoon at Tierney Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Georgetown and Penn traded goals early in a back-and-forth first quarter that saw the Hoyas take a 3-2 lead behind goals from Molly Davies, Gracie Driggs, and Molly Byrne before a late Quaker goal tied it at 3-3.
  • The Hoya offense surged in the second quarter, outscoring Penn 6-4. Annie McGovern netted two goals, while Sophia Loschert added a pair of strikes to help Georgetown build a 9-7 lead heading into the halftime break.
  • Defenses tightened in the third quarter as each team found the back of the net just once. Loschert completed her hat trick with 1:15 remaining in the period to maintain a 10-8 advantage for the Blue & Gray.
  • The fourth quarter saw a resilient Penn squad score three unanswered goals to regain the lead. The Quakers tied the game at 10-10 with 8:37 remaining and converted the go-ahead goal on a free-position shot with 4:27 left on the clock. Georgetown was unable to find the equalizer in the closing minutes, resulting in the 11-10 final.

OF NOTE

  • The Hoya offense was led by Loschert with a hat trick.
  • Driggs and McGovern each recorded three points on two goals and one assist.
  • With two draw controls on the day, Driggs moved into second place all-time in program history with 224 career draw controls.
  • Betsy Burton and Loschert paced the team with three ground balls apiece.
  • Burton also led the squad with four caused turnovers.
  • Leah Warehime notched six saves in the cage.
