Hoyas Drop Decision at No. 9 Virginia, 6-4

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University baseball team narrowly fell to the No. 9 University of Virginia Cavaliers 6-4 on Tuesday evening at Disharoon Park. With the loss in Charlottesville, Virginia, the Hoyas flip to 13-9 on the season while the Cavaliers improve to 17-4.

ON THE RECORD

"I'm really proud of our guys tonight, how they fought and how they competed. To go on the road and have a lead late in the game against the ninth-ranked team in the country says a lot about how competitive this organization is. JT Raab gave us one of the best starts we've had in a long time. It was special. Our bullpen was also great. Ashtin Gilio got us going early with a home run, and we continued to battle from there. Connor Price came through with a big two-run homer to give us a 4-2 lead late. We just came up a little short. They were able to find some holes and take advantage, but I couldn't be more proud of our effort. Now we're hungry to get back out there Friday night against Youngstown." - Head Coach Edwin Thompson

HOYA HIGHLIGHTS

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Virginia opened the scoring with a two-run homer in the bottom of the first, but the Hoyas answered right away as Gilio launched a first-pitch home run in the top of the second to cut the deficit to 2-1.
  • With two outs in the top of the fifth, Peek managed his first hit of the game with a single. In the ensuing at bat, Sheffield drew a walk to get runners on first and second. But the Hoyas would be unable to scratch any runners across home plate on the two-out rally.
  • In the top of the sixth frame, Gilio delivered an RBI single through the right side followed by Larkins who kept the pressure on with an infield bunt single. Solomon was able to move both runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Pinch hitting, Seymore would be able to lift a sacrifice fly to left field to get Gilio back home to tie the contest at 2-2.
  • The Hoyas would keep the scoring going in the top of the seventh inning when Price crushed a two-run homer to deep left, bringing Peek with him to give Georgetown the lead.
  • Virginia responded with a run-filled bottom of the seventh frame, tacking on four, and taking back the lead at 6-4. That would be enough for the ninth-ranked Cavaliers to come away with the win.

OF NOTE

  • Gilio launched his second home run of the season.
  • Price hit his fourth homer of the year.
  • Raab retired the order on strikeouts in both the second and fourth inning.
