WASHINGTON – The No. 23 Georgetown women's lacrosse team (7-3, 2-0 BIG EAST) utilized a dominant fourth-quarter performance to secure an 18-7 victory over the University of Connecticut Huskies (3-7, 0-2 BIG EAST) on Saturday afternoon at Cooper Field. After a competitive third period, the Blue & Gray outscored the Huskies 7-0 in the final frame to remain undefeated in conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Georgetown established early control, racing out to a 7-2 lead by the end of the first quarter.
Anne McGovern ignited the offense with two early strikes, while
Reagan Ziegler and
Sophia Loschert added scores to keep the pressure on the Huskies.
The second quarter remained a defensive battle, with the Hoyas adding two more goals from
Gracie Driggs and
Molly Davies to take a 9-3 lead into the halftime locker room.
UConn found momentum in the third period, outscoring the Hoyas 4-2. Led by Rayea Davis, the Huskies utilized a 3-0 run to trim the Georgetown lead to 10-7 with 2:50 remaining in the quarter. However, Loschert halted the comeback attempt by finding the back of the net with 1:05 left on the clock, giving the Hoyas an 11-7 cushion heading into the final break.
The fourth quarter was a clinical display of Hoya dominance. Georgetown's defense held the Huskies scoreless for the final 15 minutes while the offense exploded for seven goals. McGovern and Loschert continued to dismantle the UConn defense, combined with scoring strikes from Driggs,
Lauren Steer, and Ziegler to seal the 18-7 final.
