Hoyas Take Game One Against George Mason

FAIRFAX, Va. – The Georgetown University baseball team defeated the George Mason Patriots 6-5 on Friday evening at Raymond H. "Hap" Spuhler Field. With the win in Fairfax, Virginia, the Hoyas improve to 9-5 on the season while the Patriots fall to 5-6.

ON THE RECORD

"You know, great Friday baseball game. Two good teams, and it was fun to come out on top. Kai Leckszas gave us a great start with five innings, and just set the tone, and we were able to hold on to that lead for him. I thought that the game really kind of came down to pitchers on the back end, with Jack Volo in the sixth inning to get out of that jam to keep the lead, and Luke Jackman coming in and he was able to do his part. I'm really proud of him. Our team's defense behind him found a way to pick him up. I thought offensively, the big hit was Christian Hamilton, you know, hitting the home run there. That's Friday night baseball, that's all you have to do. So we'll come back tomorrow and try to win a series." - Head Coach Edwin Thompson

HOYA HIGHLIGHTS

  • Kai Leckszas tossed 5.0 innings with a pair of punchouts, allowing six hits and two runs. Leckszas improves to 3-1 on the season.
  • Luke Jackman pitched 2.1 innings, only allowing three hits and no runs to earn his third save of the season.
  • AJ Solomon was 1-for-4 with two runs scored and a walk.
  • Connor Peek went 1-for-5 with a double.
  • Jeremy Sheffield went 1-for-3 with two runs scored and a pair of walks.
  • Christian Hamilton was 2-for-4 with a home run, three RBIs, two runs scored and a walk.
  • Travis Ilitch went 1-for-3.
  • Braxton Templin drew a walk.
  • Connor Price was 1-for-3 with a pair of RBIs, a double and a walk.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Hoyas would be the first to tally runs on the scoreboard in game one of the series. To get the top of the second frame started, Sheffield laced a single through the right side, Hamilton drew a walk and then Ilitch laid down a sacrifice bunt to get both runners into scoring position. In the ensuing at bat, Templin was hit by a pitch to load up the bases. Price followed and was able to send a ball out to left field to score Sheffield and Hamilton for the first runs of the day. The Hoyas would lead 2-0.
  • In the third inning, Solomon, leading off, got the Hoya offense started with a single up the right side. Sheffield would be able to draw a walk to get on the base path. A throwing error would get Solomon to third base with Hamilton up at the dish. Hamilton proceeded to rip an RBI single to right field to score Solomon. That would be the only run scored in the top of the third frame.
  • The Patriots would manage a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth frame on a pair of  RBI singles to cut GU's lead to one.
  • The Hoyas would get back in a scoring groove when Solomon scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-2 in the top of the fifth inning. Hamilton proceeded to launch his second long ball of the season over the right field wall, also scoring Sheffield, to extend the lead to 6-2 in the contest.
  • George Mason would load the bases in the bottom of the sixth inning but would only be able to plate a single run on an RBI groundout to cut the Hoya lead to three (6-3). The Patriots wouldn't go away as an RBI double and a throwing error in the bottom of the seventh scored a pair of runs to make it 6-5 with the Hoyas narrowly holding the lead.
  • After a pair of scoreless innings for both sides in the eighth and the ninth, the Hoyas would go on to win game one of the series 6-5.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Hamilton hit his second homer of the season.
