Hoyas Fall to George Mason

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University baseball team fell to the George Mason Patriots 12-7 on Saturday evening at Capital One Park. With the loss in Tysons, Virginia, the Hoyas slip to 9-6 on the season while the Patriots improve to 6-6.

ON THE RECORD

"You know, I thought Trajan Lee gave us a great start. Will Newell did an outstanding job coming at bases loaded with nobody out there in the back part of the game. But we just weren't clean defensively today, and that was the difference. Jackson Thomas and Christian Hamilton made some really good defensive plays out there. Thomas had a big home run to get us up in the lead there. We just unfortunately couldn't get enough stops, and unfortunately, that's the name of the game. That's a good team over there, and obviously there is a chance to win a series on Sunday and that starts tomorrow." - Head Coach Edwin Thompson

HOYA HIGHLIGHTS

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Georgetown had a scoring opportunity in the bottom of the first when Sheffield had his first at bat. The senior ripped a double down the left field line, Peek hustled from first base but was tagged out at home plate to end the first inning. The first scoring of the day would belong to the Hoyas. In the bottom of the third inning, Peek ripped a single through the left side that scored Gilio  and Cafferillo to jump out to a 2-0 lead.
  • The Patriots would come back from the two-run deficit off of an RBI single in the top of the fifth inning and a solo homer in the top of the sixth to knot up the contest. GMU would take its first lead in the series off of a two-run RBI single and an RBI single to center field to make it 5-2.
  • It wouldn't take long for the Hoyas to find the answer as Thomas ripped a three-run homer on the first pitch he saw in the bottom of the sixth frame to tie the game up at 5-5, his third deep shot of the season.
  • An RBI double from the visiting team would put GU back behind in the top of the seventh inning and the Patriots would extend their lead on an error. After seven innings of play, GMU led 7-5.
  • The Patriots would tack on four more runs in the top of the eighth inning, but the Hoyas were able to put up two runs on the scoreboard in the bottom of the eighth on a fielder's choice that got Hamilton across the dish and a bunt from Thomas to get Ilitch back home. The Patriots held a 11-7 advantage headed into the ninth frame.
  • GMU was able to scratch one more run across home plate in the top of the ninth and that would be enough for the visiting team to win game two of the series, 12-7

OF NOTE

  • Thomas recorded his third home run of the season which leads the squad.
