No. 16/18 Georgetown Women’s Lacrosse Edges Delaware in Thriller

WASHINGTON – The No. 16/18 Georgetown women's lacrosse team (6-2) returned to Cooper Field on Saturday afternoon. The Hoyas secured a gritty 9-8 victory over Delaware (1-4) in a game characterized by defensive stands and late-game heroics. Georgetown utilized an explosive five-goal fourth quarter to overcome the Blue Hens.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Delaware jumped out to an early 2-0 lead behind back-to-back strikes from Ella Rishko in the first eleven minutes. Georgetown's Molly Davies answered at the 8:14 mark of the first period, assisted by Anne McGovern, to cut the deficit in half.

  • The second frame saw both teams trade goals; after a Delaware tally, Sophia Loschert found the net off another McGovern feed. A late free-position goal by Betsy Burton sent the Hoyas into the locker room trailing 4-3.

  • The third period was a defensive showcase, with Georgetown holding Delaware scoreless for the entire 15 minutes. Gracie Driggs provided the lone goal of the quarter at the 6:18 mark, leveling the score at 4-4 heading into the final frame.

  • The fourth quarter evolved into a see-saw battle featuring five ties and lead changes. After Delaware reclaimed the lead, Reagan Ziegler responded immediately off an assist from Lauren Steer. McGovern then took charge, firing home two-consecutive goals to give Georgetown a 7-6 lead. The Blue Hens refused to go away, equalizing twice more to bring the score to 8-8 with just 2:03 remaining. With the clock winding down, Molly Byrne delivered the game-winner off a McGovern assist with only 27 seconds left to secure the Hoya victory.
